I would say that you just simply have to tell them that you're afraid it's not a costume, but modern clothing that is of a different culture than the typical anglicized wear.

When I think of all the stupid things I've done...
* This is in the modern kilt forum, Traditionalists, so be careful.

According to the dictionary...
cos·tume –noun
1. a style of dress, including accessories and hairdos, esp. that peculiar to a nation, region, group, or historical period.
So it is "costume", if you ignore the prevalent connotation of the word... but since I doubt they were using it in the correct sense, education is the only key. Most other solutions are illegal

OK, if you have dealt with the people who tell you that the kilt is a costume, you know how hard it is to explain to them that if it was a costume I would be wearing a great kilt....
If you have dealt with these people before please let me know how to respond.......

The only person who ever said anything like that to me was--ironically--some kid in his "goth uniform" with dyed hair, eyeliner, lipstick, and so many piercings that he looked like he fell into my tackle box.
All I could say was "You would know Dude."
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.

It does, to some degree, depend on the context or situation.
In some cases, it's completely pointless to explain anything.
Tell us what your situation is.
