    Thumbs up hunting sporran review

My new sporran arrived today from The Scottish Lion and I must admit that I am both pleased and a bit surprised. It is an "economy," black leather, studded, hunting-style sporran that is on clearance for $25 CAD and it is much nicer than I thought it would be. I don't really need another sporran but then I got an additional 10% off through their newsletter and I couldn't resist.

Here is the LINK to the sporran in question.

The old adage about having any 2 of price, quality, and service held true and there were some difficulties with the checkout... paypal wasn't working, my discount was incorrect, and the whole order was delayed by over a week getting it sorted out. In the end I had to call them to use my Visa over the phone (at least the lady I spoke with was nice) but the pain in my posterior was well worth in the end. Shipping via UPS from Nova Scotia arrived on the morning of the third day after payment was cleared up. Total cost including tax and shipping: $34.62 CAD.

Compared to other, similarly priced sporrans I have inspected, the stitching, details, and material are much better. The pebbling on the leather is large and even, the stiff front and back pieces have some flexibility, and it generally looks good. I wouldn't use the chain strap that came with it though for fear of shredding my kilt, but that's OK, I have a better one of my own. 8.5" tall, 7.25" at the widest part, closes with a strap and snap, mouth opens, 3.5" wide. This wouldn't hold a ton of stuff but I can get my into it without any problem.

I think this sporran is versatile and could go from very casual to smart daywear. In a pinch it could be dressy (but not formal) and would be perfect for those events that start during the day and go into the evening. What do you say about this style of sporran?

    And now the pics:

Please pardon my slightly disheveled look because I was in a rush to share

I don't know what the original price was but I think I got a bargain!

A bargain, indeed! And a smart looking grouping to boot.

You are dead right-- that goes well with anything from very casual to very dressy, but not "black tie" dressy. It looks sharp, as do you.

I recently had some issues with a kilt hose order with Scottish Lion, but in the end it got sorted out, and is a nice little story (which I'll relate once my new kilt arrives & I can take photos). Suffice to say the customer service was great!

Oh, and nice looking sporran too!

That looks quite smart. You wear it well, also. The more I look at the hunting sporrans the more I like them.

    Thanks for the review.

I really like that sporran. It has a "vintage" look to it, something about both the proportions and detailing.

I like it! Been thinking of getting a hunting sporran myself!
I like how it looks with the semi-formal attire even more than the casual-wear.
    Good find!

Thanks MoR, I appreciate the confirmation from an expert!

I look forward to reading your story and seeing pics. My experience wasn't so much bad service in the sense of rude or uncaring, as inefficient. Over a week of problems trying to pay them and I had to call them up with my credit card in the end? Normally companies are a lot better at taking my money

Does that mean you might be making one? Your DIY WIP threads are interesting, so maybe it's time for a hunting sporran. Unless you just buy one from The Scottish Lion!

Thanks David. I got the Harris Tweed jacket on eBay (with a pair of hose and a tie) for steal of a deal. You can read about the experience HERE.
