Talking Galveston Dickens on the Strand Festival

Last weekend (124-5) we went down to Galveston for the 37th Annual Dickens Festival. We had nice, although different, weather for both days; Clear and warm for Saturday, and cool and breezy for Sunday.
As usual, I took a bunch of photos....

My wife's three costume changes took up a lot of space in the motel. I just brought an extra shirt and pair of hose...

Immediatly on entering the faire on Saturday, we ran into the Rouges putting on a hooley in front of Murphy's pub.

And ran into some of the Girltorage in the pub!

And I saw a bunch of friends from renfaire...

    And various lovely ladies...

The nice weather on Saturday, while a little warm for the costumers, brought out a nice big crowd! Here a stilt walking angel stays above the fray.

    More to come.....

Talking Galveston Dickens on the Strand Festival- part 2

Last but not least on Saturday, we had a little meetup of our Star Trek club, including X-Marker Triolamj.

Sunday morning at Dickens started out breezy and cold, great weather for the costumers, and it kept the hoards down till about noon...

Right in the gate we saw the stilt walker again, now as a christmas tree.

Something new and handy this year, gas powered ATMs!

Some kids on the Queen's ice rink.

We took in a show by the world champion St. Thomas' Episcopal School Pipe Band and dancers.

    Just a couple more....

Talking Galveston Dickens on the Strand Festival- Part 3

    Lots of photo ops....

One of the added attractions this year was the "Steampunk Square" where a little "alternative history" was on display...

There was supposed to be a 'Steam Punk Ball' Saturday night, I brought my formal rig, but didn't attend the ball. I ate a lot of seafood and slept though!

I think this young lady's dirigible lifted without her, maybe because she was carrying too much weight in metal !

Honestly, I'm getting a little burned out on the whole SP costuming fad, but hey, it's not all bad !

And lastly, on the way out of town Sundy evening we saw some big bikes in a little truck!

Looking through all the photos, I realize that even though there were many guys in kilts on hand, there are not many photos of kilts. I have to blame my wife, she had the camera most of the time, shooting pics of costume ideas for next time!

Anyhow, we had a lovely weekend, and are already looking forward to next year!

Thanks for posting - they all look so genteel but so animated at the same time.

Great photos. I'm impressed by the complexity of the costumes. Talk about some hours of needle work.

Cool pics! I read an article about this in the Houson Business Journal, and their emphasis was on the steampunk stuff being a big boon to the event. Looks like the article was right.

Great pics! It's also nice to see that Galveston seems to have bounced back from its hurricane woes. I've got to get back down there.

Thanks for the pics Z. We always planned on going to this event when we lived near Houston, but never made it.

Gotta ask...what's a Dickens festival, and how did it start?
