Cool Lewis: Stuart of Bute or MacLeod?

Being a Lewis, I was always under the impression that Lewis was a sept of Clan MacLeod. But a few years ago, I noticed that Lewis is also listed as a sept of Stuart of Bute. Now I don't know which tartan to wear, so I have a kilt in each tartan. How would I learn which clan my family is associated with?

The only surefire way is to trace your Lewis ancestors to their origin in Scotland and see which clan controlled those lands at the time they emigrated. On the other hand, don't be surprised if you Lewis ancestors originated in another part of Great Britain...

    Best of luck,

Lewis: Stuart of Bute or MacLeod

My great grandparents emigrated from Pitlochry in the late 1800's. That's about the extent of what I know about them.

Just so you know, MacLeod of Lewis is a clan in its own right and not a sept and I don't know where the name "Lewis" fits in, but care needs to be taken with these sept lists as many do not regard them as altogether reliable. These two Macleod clans stem from two Brothers; the elder, Tormond, headed the MacLeod of Harris clan which is the "senior" clan and Torquil, who headed MacLeod of Lewis. Apart from that I am not able to assist you, but good luck with your quest.
