    Wear your Garter Flashes right

A pet peeve - Garter Flashes do NOT go at the sides of your legs but far closer to the front. Align the inside edge of your flash to the line of your shinbone and you've got it right.

In other words - 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock are wrong - and hard to see. Wear them at about 1 and 11 o'clock and you'll look better.

And if you have dicing on your hose foldover, align that edge with the centre (no I'm not an American) of the diamond. I can just about here the "harrumphs" already, but don't take if from me alone....

Check out the Dress Regulations from the Royal Regiment of Scotland site - the big "super-regiment" in Britain now incorporating all the former Scottish regiments and there's a visual. I think they know what they're doing. They invented most of all this, after all. http://www.army.mod.uk/documents/gen..._Rulations.pdf

Yeah, I think you may have struck a nerve here.... It may be a pet peeve of yours to see other with their flashes or ties on the side of their leg, but I think it is more wrong for you to tell people they are WRONG for doing it this way, you show me some book that was written in 900AD (the first documented "birth" of Scotland) that says the ONLY RIGHT way to wear garter ties and flashes is slightly to the front, then I will say you may be correct, however, since there is NO such book, people can dress any which way they choose to dress, it is a personal preference, and not "WRONG" as for the Dress Regulations from the Royal Regiment of Scotland , that is "their" dress code and NOT something that needs to be forced on the rest of the Kilted world.

I think it must be pointed out that as a civilian I am not, nor is any other civilian subject to the "dress regulations" of the military. I have had enough of all that in my time, thank you. However, I do agree with you that the 3 o clock and 9 o clock positions do not show the flashes off to best advantage.

I do not claim any authority what so ever. My own preference is to put the trailing edge of the flashes at 3 and 9, so they are slightly forward. They can be seen from front or well around on either side, and only from directly to the rear are the flashes not visible.

I've always worn them in that manner - just observe HRH the Duke of Rothesay in his Highland attire (as well as Jock Scot, David, cajunscot, Sandy, Scott, Terry, etc) and you simply cannot go wrong - on any accord.

It's rude to post in this way. You're new to this forum and have not yet established credibility as someone who knows what he is talking about. By doing so you appear arrogant and bossy. I'm sure this was not your intent, but please modify your behavior in the future.

That's pretty much my take, trailing edges at 3 and 9, * so that likely centers the set of flashes at 2 and 10, knife behind the front flash on right leg. This is with my feet facing pretty much forward, I'm bowlegged enough to where the flashes end up more on the sides than front anyhow!

    * (Although, sometimes just to spice up my outfit, I'll go nuts and put them at 2:45 and 9:15)

I never really thought about measuring where my flashes sit based on clock positions. I merely wear them slightly to the front of the sides, if that makes any sense. Now I do not have diced hose yet, but I do have argyle topped hose, so I suppose there might be an alignment issue, if someone were able to look dead on at both my flashes at the same time. That not being possible, approximate positions will suffice.

I concur. Politeness and a soft manner are very important here. Your tone takes on the sound of an intruder calling our baby ugly and telling us you don't much care what we think because you know it all.

While I wear my flashes or ties with the center at approximately the center point between 3:00 and 12:00 on the right leg (and the same relative position on the left leg), there is no law or requirement to do so. At the very worst it's a minor thing.
