Cheap kilts in uk
I would just like to give a heads up to any one living in the UK that LIDL have got cheap entry level kilts ,brogues ,kilt belts etc.etc.
Whilst I would always reccomend that you buy the best quality kilt that you can afford.
This is a great way for anybody on a budget or just wanting to try out highland wear ....................hopefully they will get the bug from there
I know some people don't class these as real kilts as they are not made from wool BUT .there will be people that have not got the money to purchase a tank at the moment but would love to own a kilt.
Check them out and if you get one I,m sure after a wee while you will be on here asking wear you can buy the real deal

Some of them (the more expensive ones) are indeed made of wool - my friend Mike got one a couple of years ago, they are about twice the price of the cheaper, non wool, ones.

I really think this is great.
Cheap kilts may very well mean the start of kilt wearing to many. And sooner or later they will buy better and more expensive ones.
Kiltmakers should be happy, not angry. In the long run the good ones, at least, shall profit from the Lidl initiative.

Well said Greg. That's exactly how I started. When I first bought a Kilt it was for a bit of a wheeze and I could never have seen myself justifying £300+ on a single garment. I bought a PV cheapy for about £40 initially which did the job for a while. It was this that got me hooked and I now own nine wool kilts. Not all bought new and at full whack I'll admit but several of them were. I have even commissioned a special weave (Bruce Hunting) made to measure which cost me some. Without an entry level kilt to get me going I would never have known the sheer enjoyment of wearing one (or been so hopelessly addicted to them now. Pesky cheap Kilts... Paaaah!!) I would also not have met such the wonderful array of folk that I've encountered since I started this journey, both on the web and in person.
Trefor: I think this is a picture of Mike's Lidl Kilt. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have three from Lidl, there are places that i would never think to wear one of my more expensive kilts, so these cheap kilts have their place in pubs, football and rugby matches, parties etc.
Tomorrow night I'm at a Burns Supper and like last year there will be lots of kilties who are first time buyers and its the Lidl kilts that they will be wearing and yes this is the first step in their graduation to full highland regalia

My boyfriend calls them "Stunt kilts" and wears them to set up the tents for the highland games and any other "dirty" job you wouldn't want to wear your expensive kilt for.

I very much agree that cheap or inexpensive kilts (~<$50) are the way to get more people buying the more expensive kilts(~>$100). I bought a Thrifty Kilt from Stillwater kilts; I would have never shelled $200 for anything that I did not understand.
From an economics position, entry-level products are just about the only way companies can grow to any significant degree. Based on this, Stillwater Kilts should find their sales increasing as time goes on, so long as the keep their Thrifty Kilt line.
While I probably won't buy another Thrifty kilt, I certainly would have never bought any of their products if SWK did not have an entry-level product. My next purchase will be either a Standard SWK or a heavyweight SWK. I trust SWK's products enough to buy another in the next year; I will not likely have any experience with any custom kilt for at least four years.

Just bear in mind that entry level kilts a re fine but not all of them are good, I like my SWK Heavy but I find the thrifty comparable to an instakilt IE fine inside but totally useless if your going anywhere.
Just my tuppence tho
