for folks making their own kilts...
It is often difficult to get the fell shaping just right, or the kilt to hang right..difficult to fot to yourself....google 'duct tape double' and make an exact duplicate of your torso...a cheap dressmakers dummy...can pin to it amd adjust measurements etc....

Not a bad idea but kilts are exceptionally easy to fit.
I have had far more trouble getting waistcoats (which are quite simple) and jackets to fit.
and in all of the kilts I've made for people I haven't seen in person, only one was sent back for alterations.

I made one, with the help of a friend. Great when cutting or sizing jackets, and probably for my upcoming vest project. But so far, hasn't been necessary for kilt construction. In fact, the weight of a kilt may make pinning it to a form, a real challenge.

That was fun, duct tape manikins.

This is a great trick that the ladies have been onto for some time. If you've ever priced dress forms---doggies!
Using the buddy system, for the cost of a t-shirt and some duct tape you can have a tailoring form to your precise measurements. Not bad!

I will be making one as soon as I can nail down the wife to mummify me...I have picked up some pvc pipe to put it on a stand as it gets stuffed...
I believe it is going to make it easier to adjust fells and lay out aprons to their final size.
I do not make my kilts in a particularly traditional fashion...I am somewhere between elsie and barb, and x-kilt...

Well, here's a pic of one I made. Here's a few tips I learned while building it.
-Have a friend do the taping, not you. It's more accurate.
-If it is hard to breath, you are wrapped too tight. ![Confused](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)
-Tape in a coat hanger (or a pole from the bottom) before sealing it up.
-Before sealing it up, put in some key body support. In pic below, the red marks where I cut large discs of dense styrofoam and inserted at chest, waist and hip locations. Measured carefully and cut to my body size. Held inside with more duct tape.
-Throw the shaved bits of foam into the form as filler. I put in other light weight filler too.
-Spraying foam filler is easy, AFTER it is taped up. Poke a hole with something sharp, and spray in. Seal holes with.... more duct tape.
-When using it to size a jacket, dress the dummy fully. The layers of clothes UNDER my jacket made a big difference in the resulting jacket size.
-It's humbling to see yourself in 3D. Plus it may encourage you to increase the duration and frequencies of your workouts.![Shocked](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif)

A better option may be the water-activated Paper packing tape. It holds a firm shape when dry, rather than the duct which must be stuffed.
it is available for about $10 a roll from Staples.
