    Reversable Sporran Idea

I'm thinking of making a brown leather sporran for myself and was wondering what opinions any of you would have about this idea.
have a cantle of some kind for the top (leather or mettle I don't know)
    no flap
both the front and the back stamped leather, different designs
the sporran straps made of braided leather attached to the left and right sides

as far as the leather designs I want stamp somewhat generic Boy Scout and Wood Badge images on one side and have my patrol on the other side (Antelopes ftw!) so that I can easily pick which I want to show that day, or even switch during the day with no hassle.

If I start this I'll post pics as I go

If you have the skills to actually do something like that, I think it would be a unique and cool sporran. If you do endeavor on this project, pictures would be great!

What a great idea. Another possibility is a dress sporran on one side with fur and a day wear design on the other.

I think your best bet would be to go with a leather "cantle" - something along the lines of the L&M hunting sporrans. You will be hard pressed to find a metal cantle that will work well or look good flipped backward. My only concern with the straps attaching to the sides is that it will hold the sporran much closer to your body than the usual way of attaching at the back. This will necessarily cause more wear on your kilt (and may not be very comfortable).

Mmmm, fur plus heat plus pressure = felt fabric. I wouldn't be in a hurry to try that one.

Could you make loops or channels on both sides for the sporran straps and disguise them in some way so that the set that is to the front is not obvious? Maybe you could use them to hang tassels, or use decorative stamping to make them part of the design when they are not being used to hold the straps.

It does sound like a clever idea. I might be tempted to use two different leathers on one side, but I like the play of different textures and colors in leather.

I'm always for trying new things and for getting the most use out of my crafting efforts. In other words a wholehearted encouragement to go ahead with this idea. Now a bit from my own experience. My own sporran has a pocket on the back which I use for public transit transfer vouchers and the like. It necessitated moving the strap attatchments farther apart. I found this had the pleasant side effect of holding the sporran more stable. If you go ahead with attatching the straps on the sides, you may be similarly pleased. Or maybe you like the jaunty bouncing. Good luck.

The only metal cantle that I feel you could use would be one of the 1953 MOD cantles. The actual leather bag is held in on nipples with spring loaded clasps. The bags can be turned around in about 2 minutes.

I don't know how this would work but how about a plain sporran with detacheable front panel held on by small press studs then you could make several front panels to change the look of the sporran.
