Can I make cheap and quick "kilts" ????

I have a bachelor party coming up in June and I would like to create 9 decent "kilts" for myself as well as the other groomsmen. Here is what I am thinking...

I am not going to be using an actual tartan, that's why i have kilt quoted. I am going to buy some cheap tartan looking fabric at a fabric depot near by, but what I am wonder is how to convern the fabric, quickly and cheaply, into somewhat decent kilts only needed for about 3 days. I guess I just need quick help with some quick pleating, etc...

Any quick and to-the-point info would be grand, thanks in advance mates!

Hmm.. TO be honest, I think the time and effort you will spend to sew something half-a$$ed will not be worth the outcome... It won't look good, and you'll spend a long time doing it to boot.

Personally, if I were to pay myself for my time spent doing it, I would get a FAR better bargain just ordering a set of 9 thrifty kilts from Stillwater, or even some Gold Bros. kilts (yeah, yeah, I know).

Edit: Just checked Stillwater's website. A Thrifty kilt can be had for $28.95. Cheap as Borsch! And you have a real kilt... In a real tartan... Surely you can't beat THAT.

Result: Everyone will look GREAT, the kilts will last a LOT longer than 3 days, you may end up with some kilt converts from your groomsmen, who may actually start wearing one, and even if no one does, they will have some resell-ability on eBay or Craigslist or similar.

If you just whack something together from some plaid cloth.... I guarantee it'll take time, won't look right, and when it's all over and done with, it'll just get chucked in the trash (because you sure won't want to wear it again, and the re-sell-ability will be nil).

Lol there are only a few problems with this! I am looking to spend less that 50 bucks, probably at max! You do prove some good points, however, but regardless of what happens they will get to wear real kilts in my wedding so hopefully no matter how "thrifty" I get, they will still get to see the real thing in action.

And honestly, non-tartan crap cloth getting chucked in the trash doesn't bother me too much...although, I won't want to give kilties a bad rap. I don't think I will, however, as we will be in the woods I believe for the entire trip...unless there are any kilted birdwatchers we should be fine.

I don't know, decisions! Decisions! DECISIONS!!!! lol

What about ebay? Kilts come up second hand there all the time and if you arent fussy about colour, you might be able to get them all within your budget by looking for last minute finishing auctions.

As they say in costuming, you can pick any two out of I want it cheap, I want it fast, and I want it right. You can make decent cheap kilts, but it takes time and effort, you can also buy cheap kilts fast if you go second hand and arent overly fussy

Why don't you go for great kilts. No sewing, you just need 4 yards double width fabric and a belt x 9. Look up "how to put on a Great kilt" on Youtube. It could be great fun just putting it on.

    Great kilts

You can give everybody a length of fabric and make great kilts. See other posts for details. OR, if you want to try making a Not-So-Great Kilt, you might try the same method ( fold and belt) with a kilt that stops at the waist.... A little adaptive technology might make it happen.

If you can figure out how to quickly pleat them and fix the pleats- maybe using holes and a drawstring- you can go back and stitch them. And let the belt hide the cheating. OR just staple the whole thing together if that is the level of "craftsmanship" you can tolerate. Just don't attach MY name to the things.
