70 Years Ago Today
The Germans bombed Dublin.

Did they mistake it for Belfast?
Or were they trying to tell them not to be neutral?

"Thank You" All Allied Powers Veterans and Servicemen and Women
Hear hear Scott and all!
Let us not forget the brave men and woman who have fought, and some who have made the ultimate sacrifice - in all Allied conflicts throughout history and today - especially WWII. And to my fellow Marines, old and young alike...Semper Fidelis and Ductus Exemplo!!!

It seems as if the Luftwaffe bombed Ireland on more than one occasion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing...n_World_War_II

Thanks for that link, Brian. It seems that navigational error must have played some role, although there also seems to be an element of deliberate targeting.
Good to know that reparations were paid, although only by West Germany (in the post-war period).
And I note some references to Rathdown. Scott, did this affect your family’s property, or only a place connected somehow with the family name?
Regards,
Mike

I didn't know the Germans had bombed Dublin. Good way to force a non-belligerant out of neutrality, I guess. Thanks for the history lesson.
No wonder creagdhubh always looks so good; he learned how to dress properly in the Corps.
Semper fi, Kyle. I don't look so good anymore, but I once did. Now my blues are hanging on the wall of the local American Legion.
Jim: Once a sergeant, still a Marine.

Hahaha! Thanks for the kind comment Terry, the Corps did teach me rather well I must admit! Semper Fi to you as well Devildog. My blues do not fit any longer as well...I haven't worn them (or had any reason to) for quite some time now.
I had no idea the Germans bombed Dublin either - I guess I never realised they actually went that far north, and a wee bit west, into Britain!
I too would like to know if Scott's family in Ireland was affected by the bombing in any way?
Cheers all,

"Who are we neutral against?" -- reportedly said by an Irishman at the start of "The Emergency" (what WWII was referred to in the Republic).
