If I remember correctly this seller was auctioning off lengths of tartan from mills which were no longer in business - selling off old stock, in other words. I have made a few different kilts from heavy weight (16 oz) cloth which clients of mine have purchased from him and then sent to me to have their kilts made. All so far have been excellent in my experience.

Welcome to the rabble.
I applaud you for being adventurous enough to set out to make your own kilt.
No, I haven't had any dealings with this particular merchant. I did look at his items, most seem to be lower weight fabrics, (8 - 12 oz).
This merchant does have a good e-bay rating, so the products should be decent quality.
I am not claiming to have any expertise in kilt making, (I did buy Barb Tewksbury's book: "The Art of Kilt Making"), and intend to one day fashion my own kilt; but from reading these forums on kilt making, and seeing what fabric weights kilt makers are offering their wares in, I'm not sure that these weight fabrics are the best for kilt making, but the heavier end of this range could make an acceptable kilt.
I'll defer to the experienced kilt makers in the rabble and their respective opinions, though...
There is also the X-Kilt: advice, methods, and instructions can be readily found in the DIY forum, this may be the easiest kilt for a beginner to undertake.
If you live in a warm climate, you might opt for lighter weight fabrics to begin with.
The lighter weight fabrics would make great fly-plaids though.

I just recently made myself a kilt in 11 Oz fabric and there is a DEFINITE difference in the kilt behavior vs. 13&16 OZ. ITs actually very enjoyable, but it wrinkles terribly if you sit. That being said, its a wonderful supplement for warmer weather kilting.

I'll endorse the post from 'myclantartan' above. I bought a kilt length of 15oz fabric from this gentleman and it was exceptional quality and very good value. I now have it made into a superb double-box pleated kilt, crafted by the amazingly skilled hands of Lady Chrystel of France. You won't go wrong with any cloth you buy from him.

I too have purchased a couple of kilt lengths of tartan from this supplier. One was 16oz Lochcarron "Auld Scotland" and the other is a yet to be constructed Shetland tweed. Both were a good value and the service was excellent. As a previous poster mentioned, many, if not most, of his tartans are high quality light weight material. If that is what you are looking for, then your on your way!
