    Any Scottish Poles....or Polish Scots?

I have never met my father, as he left before I was born, and all I know about him really is that he was born and raised in Poland, and I believe his parents were Polish as well. My mom jokes that I must be part Scottish, as I sort of look the part (very light skin, lots of freckles, and my hair is starting to turn a little red!) and because I love everything Scottish ...so I looked it up for fun and became aware of the long history of Scots moving to Poland and vice versa...so I was wondering if there is anyone here that has Polish and Scottish roots. I would love to research my family history on my father's side...but I really have no clue how I'd go about doing it. Come to think of it...I don't know all that much about my mother's side...but I can at least trace part of that back to the early 1800's.

We have many Poles in Scotland, some have arrived in recent years and others are descendants from those that settled here after WW2(there even may be some still alive from the event) and it is not unusual for a few Poles, or those of Polish decent, to wear the kilt here. I can't say that they wear a Polish tartan, frankly I would not know, but whatever tartan they wear they do make a point of wearing the kilt well, which we appreciate and if we think about it, I think we are rather flattered.

I'd also be interested in hearing more about tracing roots in Poland. One of my ancestors on the maternal line married a Bernard Pavlosky in the late 1700s and all I've been able to find out is that although family legend says he was Russian, the name is more likely to be Polish (though I'm happy to be educated further if that may not be the case). Apart from his name, and where and when they married and when he died, I know nothing more about his family and would love to find out a little more at some stage.

The few kilted Scottish Poles that I know wear Prince Charles Edward Stewart tartan, the latter being deemed appropriate as BPCs Mother was a Pole.

There Are A Number In Inverness

I was in Inverness in January and looking to find out the Mass schedule discovered there is an active Polish community at St Mary's on Huntly Street.

Good links above - There were many Scottish mercenaries that ended up in Poland and stayed.

We have a large population of Polish immigrants here in Connecticut and I've met several with distinctively Scottish names whose ancestors were in Poland for several hundred years.

One more: a Polish Pipe Band:

Interestingly, the Poles have "Highlanders" in their Army as well:

The Podhale Rifles, a mountain rinfantry regiment of the Polish Army. The Gorales (literaly "Highlanders" in Polish) have a large population in Chicago:

I have nothing but respect for the Polish people, who truly know the price of freedom.

My father's family (Blaylock) is Scottish. One branch can be traced back to the 16th century in Annandale.

My mother's family (Dudziak, pronounced somewhere between "do jock" and "do chok") is Polish. A "duda" is a Polish bagpipe and a "dudziak" is a bagpipe player.

I wish I could help you with genealogy, but I know very little. My brother, using courthouse records, traced our father's family to the 1790s in western North Carolina. Good luck in your attempts.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
