My first kilt!
Well I finally did it.... I went and got a kilt!
I had already gone to this store here in Halifax (Nova Scotia) called the 'Plaid Place' on Monday and tried on a kilt (first time) and yesterday I thought about buying one but thought it wasn't reasonable to do (since I have a couple bills and have a measly income) but today I broke down and just went there and tried it on again ... this time I came out of the change room with it on and asked the woman there some questions.
(sorry for the pics ... taken inside - some underexposed and had to be brightened up on the computer and some over-exposed with a flash)

(It's an 8-yard kilt ... in the pics it may look a bit too low below the knees but that's really just the angle of the camera doing that)
Anyway, I got it (I liked this general Scottish tartan) and pondered if I should wear it out into the 'real world' (although the 'real world' usually seems quite fake to me in many ways) ... I decided I would just walk home kilted (but not 'regimental'). On my way home I walked into an Army/Navy surplus store looking for a belt and any kind of small bag I could use as a sporran substitute for now .... I just found a belt I liked.
Then I went into Sobey's (a grocery store) and got a few things...
It's a bit different walking around in a kilt ... you don't see anyone walking around in them often here except near downtown for touristy things or weddings at the Public Gardens. Certain bus tours everyone wears Nova Scotia tartan kilts and at Alexander Keith's old brewery building restaurant, waiters wear them ... and also a couple people at the Saturday market wear them - which I go to with my paintings.
Some day I'd like to get an Anderson tartan kilt (My mother was an Anderson from Newfoundland).

Re: My first kilt!
Looks good. I like the length. Mine are lower at mid knee and I figure I can hike it up to top of knee when in wet grass or hiking. We never see kilts in Houston so it's an oddity but I enjoy mine. I would never consider undergarments. I might as well wear Bermuda shorts.
Please excuse the spelling errors. My IPhone is "helping" me.

"you don't see anyone walking around in them often here except" ME!!! =D
Welcome to the wonderful kilted world Lad!! From now on trousers will never be the same... That kilt certainly suits you laddie, and the Anderson tartan is a fine looking tartan as well. (my girl is an Anderson)
If you can find it, a surplus wide police belt looks quite smart. AND since your here in Halifax, when your ready for a good sporran, like a leather day sporran, you can go over to Dartmouth and speak to Peggy at L&M Highland. Sometimes she has sporrans there that have slight irregularities in the leather that she sells at wholesale price.
Again, welcome and congratulations!

Re: My first kilt!
Well it looks like a good fit and looks good on ya. May seem strange at first but after a while you get used to wearin a kilt and you will then find pants a bit strange .
Sounds like there are more kilt wearers there than here in the north of Scotland. ![Confused](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)
Enjoy.

Looks good. You realize, this may be your first kilt, but probably not your last. You will soon become kilt addicted like many of us here.

Re: My first kilt!
Lad, you wear it well. You've got all the shots, front, side, back and the pleats. I understand about the camera angle from the photo of my first kilt. My wife was standing on hirer ground than I was on, not good. Now I have her trained to bend down a bit when taking a photo so the camera is more at waist level. Better result. My first kilt, march of 2009, now I have six. Beware of the addiction.
