    Favorite Contemporary, Non-Traditional Apron Style?

Just wondering which kind of apron styles or strategies you like on non-traditional kilts. I prefer the wide aprons that are about as wide as the traditional kilt apron. However, it is my understanding that there are narrow and even reverse taper aprons on some of the non-traditional kilts. Fooling around with some makeshift apron models, I can see how even a wide under apron with a diagonal, reverse-taper top apron might work.

    So... what do you prefer?

    Thank you.

my Personal favorite non traditional apron front is about 8 to 10" wide and uses 4 or 6 buttons in a mariner stile front closer and front facing box pleats like a utility kilt im making one now off the Xkilt directions but with my own front and a few added changes to suit my personal style also i like a built in belting System were the belt is attached to the kilt

Re: Favorite Contemporary, Non-Traditional Apron Style?

One of these days, I will have to get a close look at a Utilikilt and see how those work. The built in belt sounds kind of neat, but snaps make me nervous on a kilt. I can imagine that a diagonal, reverse-taper apron could be reshaped into some interesting decorative designs with curves and so on.

My Buzz Kidder top apron ended at the right side buckle in a strait, ninety degree, vertical edge. That bothered me a little because it didn't extend to the reverse pleat on the under apron edge, but was still almost like a traditional apron. I ended up letting out the hem of that vertical edge, widening the apron a little, and also re shaping it a little.

It happened to have a misplaced right hand buckle, so I also adjusted that too. I had to have one strap on the first hole and the other strap on the second hole or it pulled a fold into the under apron and opened up the reversed pleat on the right side. It all works well now, but I'm tired of doing surgery on my kilt.

the oragin of the built in belt g back to 2001 when i did a pair of cargo shorts that had leather straps and bucked to keep the pockets closed it was a cool looking idea
the way it works on the kilt is there are on the left and the right sides of the waits band applets that snap closed to the back side then there is a metal triangular shaped wire loop that is attached to the leather belt so you can snap the belt or anchor it to the kilt at the sides i have to do this as you can not wash a leather belt you mite say why do this well the metal and leather is a cool and if i do say so stylish addition to your kilt it adds to that alternative look that i was going for in my every day work kilts i am a fine artist working in oils and so i like to ware my kilt when i am at my easel i get up and down all day long when i paint to look at my work at various distances paints begin to hurt me in the parts that you guys know what im talking about my paints or shorts as i mostly ware shorts if im not kilted just ride up and i dont like to sweat so kilts are ideal and if im going to make one then im going to put some of my artistic skills in to it so not only do i make kilts but i try to do a bit of fashion design in them too

Oh, ok. I was thinking about a thin, two-inch-wide webbing belt being built in to the cargo kilt at the waist, but that sounds cool too.

Re: Favorite Contemporary, Non-Traditional Apron Style?

It's nice to have a variety. I like my UK, but by the same token I'd also like to have a modern kilt with a wide apron with which I could have the option of wearing a kilt pin and/or sporran if I so chose. With a UK, either accessory just looks downright goofy.

That's a little bit like what I'm thinking, CDNSushi. The narrow apron kilts with cargo pockets make a nice replacement for cargo shorts; a jungle explorer kilt...

Wide aprons let you bring in some of the kilt accessories for a whole different look. Both can be nice.

    * I should say, that's what I'm starting to think, now that I'm thinking more about the two.

Re: Favorite Contemporary, Non-Traditional Apron Style?

Ive got two Elkommando sports kilts by Mountain Hardwear. They have a wide apron just like a traditional kilt. I prefer this for some of the same reasons stated above, use of a sporran or other accessories. I plan to make some non traditional fabric box pleated kilts this winter but in doing so they will have a full apron and no pockets. To me the full apron just looks nicer on me, Im glad the people that wear the UKs and other kilts are doing so. Gets you in a kilt and that is what matters.
