Good decision on your part -- except for the timing. If you get it now, you could have it for Christmas -- now that'd be a GREAT Christmas present

    Any thoughts on color/tartan/etc.?

Ive got a SWK casual and like it very much. It is the weathered MacKenzie which is very nice earth tones. Though the thrifty kilt is a good starter, and they have more tartans to chose from, the Economy has the pleats sewn to hip and a couple other things that might make it fit nicer. If money is the issue than I say kilt on with the Thrifty and enjoy your newfound freedom.

I have a black watch Economy from Stillwater, and I really like it. Its not a 16oz wool kilt by any means, but its comfortable and looks decent. I'm sure the Thrifty is nice as well, but I'd say if you can afford it go with the Economy. Just my 2 cents.
