Yahoo! Go Blue Fat Cow Daddy Host!
I have talked to several people who have all given me very contrary views as to which hosting company I should go with. My plans are as follows:
To buy one hosting package, along with at least 5-6 domains.
I am trying to find the most affordable and trustworthy company I can.
Here are some I have looked at thus far:
www.bluehost.com
www.godaddy.com
www.yahoowebhosting.com
www.ipage.com
www.fatcow.com
...to name a few.
Anyhow, I have found very contrasting reviews. And godaddy in particular has had reviews about them stealing domains...which was some of the most worrisome reviews.
Anyhow, anyone have some good solid advice?
I do thank those who have already contributed by other means, but I am looking for a mass of opinions now. Thanks all!
Zach

Re: Yahoo! Go Blue Fat Cow Daddy Host!
Hi Zach,
First: love the thread title! Well-played.
I'm on the board of directors for a very small 501-c-3 and maintain their website. Our site is hosted by GoDaddy, a company about which I have mixed feelings.
While I personally do not care for their advertising and promotional practices, I must say that they offer low prices and excellent services. They held my hand and step-by-stepped me thru the initial process and domain registration.
They have also been quick to respond in the few instances that there has been a problem and have been heads-up when hackers try to elbow in. I do have to endorse them for their operations and customer service. You may also have read that the company was recently sold to new owners who seem to be keeping the original mojo going.
Natch, they are a business and will try to sell you the sun, moon and stars. But if you ask for only a small planet they will provide one with no fuss.
From what I've read, most of what you've heard about them "stealing" a domain has been due to the domain registration expiring and the owner not renewing timely. Then the owner screams "robbery."
Rules are for everybody, and if you miss the renewal deadline, they have a right to sell the name because it is no longer owned. There are no grace periods and it's the way the game is played. They do send plenty of warnings and invitations to renew.
You don't say what type of site yours will be. If you are a non-profit, look around within your general field as there may be similar groups or suppliers that will host a non-profit org's site free or at reduced cost. We are looking into such an arrangement right now.
I am not in the IT field, but serve as the one-eyed man for my group because figuring it out interested me. There are probably a zillion kilt-wearing computer geeks on this forum so I'm sure you'll get wider (and better) opinions than mine.

I was quite happy with prices and up-time from 1and1,com
They do offer a dizzying variety of packages and services so shop carefully to make sure your selection meets your criteria (ftp uploads, ability to paste in PayPal buttons, etc.)

I ran a site on Yahoo! Small Business for six years and was always happy with their reliability and service. It was for an association to which I belong and the guy who succeeded me as webmaster moved to Go Daddy because it was cheaper.

I use IPower for my domain hosting and haven't had any issues to speak of. The place I work for also has multiple customers using their services and we will happily recommend them to anyone looking. My wife's domain is hosted through StartLogic and I would definitely NOT recommend them; this will be moved as soon as her service contract ends.

Re: Yahoo! Go Blue Fat Cow Daddy Host!
I use Bluehost for my new website and I've been very happy with them. My first website has used Hostway for a long time and once I decide how I'll deal with the old website I want to cancel my Hostway account. My husband wants to move his website from Hostway to Bluehost too.
To be honest, I'm no expert on tech specs or keeping up with who is best... I've honestly been questioning even keeping a blog and website because I focus my time and research on other subjects and have no real interest in computer/Internet technologies... but I've been very happy with Bluehost so far and intend to stay with them. I like the features, and when I've needed help or questions answered they were good about getting back to me or fixing something that somehow got messed up.
I hope that helps.

Go Daddy's fine for registering domains, but don't use 'em for hosting. Awful.
While I use a local hosting company for TucsonSentinel.com (SimplyBits.net), I use the very affordable, reliable asmallorange.com for a lot of hosting. They provide amazing service, too, starting at just $5/mo. I can give a bit of a referral discount to anybody who wants one....
