Mystery Tartan
Greetings All,
This will be my first Thread (or post) since the "I am a Newbie" one. I have a question here that has baffled the Scottish Tartan Museum... Well, anyway, It baffled the STM tent at our local games.
About a year ago I got a used kilt (at a good price) from someone and they did not remember what tartan it was.
When I went to our local Scottish Games I went to every clan tent and looked at every tartan book from cover to cover and could not find it. Even the nice tartan books that the STM had brought did not contain it. So...
I was wondering if any of you could identify it? I really like it and it would be great to know what it really is.

So far the answer to the inevitable question has been " I don't know and neither does anyone else."
I am glad to be a member of XMTS!

Agree with the sort of like weathered MacKenzie. Also sort of like this Macdonald of the Isles weathered hunting - but a much smaller sett.

Re: Mystery Tartan
Weathered Dress MacKenzie is exactly what I was going to say, except that this tartan has a dark border on each side of the red line, where the official Dress MacKenzie doesn't.

I don't know, but it looks awesome. I'm a big fan of weathered and earth tone tartans.

It's definitely a trade version of Dress Wheathered MacKenzie. I have three on record, all from the 1950-70 era. This makes 4 (K guards to the R pivot).
The cloth looks to be saxony and the straps are thin so I guess that this is a woman's kilt/kilted shirt or a poorer quality man's kilt that dates to c1970-80.

Re: Mystery Tartan
I was going to say it's a variation of the Dress MacKenzie in weathered colors, as well.
What games were you at when you tried to have it IDed? Just curious as we have different volunteers staffing tents at different games, depending on availability.
