Help identify this tartan and subject

I need the help of all the Xmarks detectives out there. This week I was visiting family in Florida and I went to the Museum of Arts & Sciences, Daytona Beach. In the Museum they have a section called the " visible storage area" that is just that, ceramics, sculpture, arms, armour, furniture and paintings- thousands of the stacked behind clear walls. As I came to one section I was amazed to find a beautifully painted life size painting of a Scotsman. I went to the info desk and asked after the painting, they had me meet with the Chief Currator ( who is a very nice Welsh woman) and the painting Currator. They gave me some information that they have after I told them about this informative site and asked if we could gather more info.
Here is the info: Artist is J. Hamilton Mackensie, Title- " PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG SCOTSMAN" Ca. 1900 oil on canvas
I have 2 photos and have requested a closeup of the head area.

MacDonald or Cameron of Erracht, possibly Cochrane lthough that's much less likely. A close up will confirm if there is a yellow stripe.

Very interesting! I'm still on the trail, but here is an interesting site that gives a bit of information regarding the artist, as well as some examples of his other works:

Looks more like a white stripe in which case MacDonell of Glengarry is more likely. The cap badge is difficult to make out. It might just be a standard Scottish Rampant Lion rather than a specific clan one.

having enlarged the badge, it looks like the top quarters -from rear haunch to top of head (demi) of a horse, or possibly lion, rearing up (rampant).

Cant make out the detail in the badge. Is there anything in the lion's raised paw? If a blade is extending from the paw, length and angle would help determine clan representation.

From body shape, Farquharson, MacDuff and Young are all possible as well as others.
