Re: Square Buttons
I recall someone commented, in the long discussion on a doublet, that at one time, square buttons were just the coolest. Some things just stick, I guess.

Re: Square Buttons
Square, or, diamond shaped buttons are indeed often seen on dress kilt jackets, although round ones are sometimes seen on dress jackets too, even salmon shapes on occasion . I am not sure that I have seen square shaped buttons on normal day attire though. But to answer your question, in truth, I know not!

Re: Square Buttons
The square button seem to be rather hard on the buttonholes, though.

Re: Square Buttons
Highlanders probably liked the look of them and it stuck. I don't know.

Re: Square Buttons
The reason this answer isn't obvious is because you're approaching the question the wrong way. The real question is, "Why are almost all buttons round?"
Buttons can be made in any shape. But approximately 43 second past 1:46 p.m. on May 12, 1347 it was discovered that buttons of any shape other than round tended to cause entire populations to be paralyzed with fear, because they didn't know which way the button should be oriented.
Some kings of that era used that to deadly effect, stifling resistance in areas they wished to conquer by giving gifts of jackets with square buttons.
However, when jackets with square buttons were delivered to the Scots, the response was, "Nifty!"
Now we know, through recent research carried out independently in Glasgow and Cleveland, that only people intelligent enough to wear kilts are able to wear square buttons without being constantly paralyzed with fear that they may not be aligned properly.

Anyone ever tell you that you have way too much time on your hards, Iain?

In our office today, out of a normal complement of 14, there are two of us. That makes it too difficult to get some important things accomplished, and too easy to get unimportant things done!
