    Smile New Kitty!

He's here! May I present...BUSTER! This is my wife's first pet ever (other than her hermit crab when she was a kid) and our first pet as a married couple. He was adopted from the SPCA, he's a year old, and is one of the sweetest and best behaved cats I have ever seen. He was a little bit of a cry baby when we first got him home. I think he has abandonment or loneliness issues. But now he's right at home and seems super well adjusted. Poor guy has a little bit of a cold but other than that he's great. You wouldn't believe how happy my wife is. Sorry about the links. For some reason my PC won't work the pic insert button on the site correctly.

P.S. Yes he's named after the dummy on Mythbusters. Hey, my wife picked it, don't look at me!

    She's awesome, huh?

    Congratulations on the new cat!

Buster isn't such a bad name for a cat. You will notice my avatar, his name is Buster Boo.

Cute! But do have that 'cold' checked out by a vet. It could be kennel cough (Bordetella) even coming from the SPCA. Our last rescued kitty - yes from the SPCA, had it and infected our two older cats within a day or so.

Yeah, we were made aware that he may get "feline flu" from another cat in the shelter he was at. He's going in to get neutered on Thursday so I'll mention it to the vet then.

    Thanks,
    Hugh

Glad you all are getting along well, and he has a good home, now.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Just beware of the wee lad’s claws, Hugh.
Our tomcat (aged six) has never learned to sheath his claws, and currently both the wife and I are sporting red scratches on our thighs as a result.
Hope you manage to deal with the sniffle.
    Regards,
    Mike

    Re: New Kitty!

By all means, check with your veterinary about those cold symptoms. We've had feline upper respiratory illness (aka 'kitty cold') bouncing around our shelter since about Christmas. We keep the affected cats in one room, and isolated from the others. It seems to take a couple of weeks with treatment to run its course. Without treatment, it is like whatever bug is going around at a child's school. Eventually, everyone gets it, at least once.

Also, without treatment, your cat may become dehydrated (in some cases the cat does not want to eat or drink), and need intravenous fluids, and/or force feeding. Nether is pleasant to do, as the cat may not want to cooperate with the caregiver.

    Re: New Kitty!

Congratulations on the new housemate. If this is your first cat, I highly advise a book: The Cat Behavior Answer Book by Arden Moore. Even if it's not your first, cruise by the local bookstore and see if they have a copy on the shelf. If they also have a coffee shop on premises, just sit down and skim through whatever strikes your fancy first. You'll probably buy it.
