Tartan Day Attire?????
Our scottish society will be celebrating tartan day on the 22nd of April. We will be having service at a local Methodist Church. My problem is, that I would like to wear my Dress MacMillan kilt, but I am having a dickens of a time coming up with daywear to go with it.
Does the Rabble have any suggestions as to colors and day attire to go with it or should I default to my usual daywear with my MacMillan Black kilt?

I like what you have on in your Avator , Wear any Jacket and try to find Brown leather to go with it -ie brown shoes , brown belt , brown sporran . I mean you could wear anything with that new sporran you just made and it would look great ,
No one is going to be looking at anything but your new sporran anyway . LOL

Harold,
In my opinion, I would go with your initial idea of wearing the MacMillan dress tartan, as that is such a striking and recognisable sett! I would argue that virtually any colour of tweed jacket and waistcoat would look rather smart with the tartan. A collared shirt, neck tie, your new MOD sporran with the brown bag, coloured hose and polished, black brogues would also look quite smart. Since you will be indoors ("a local Methodist Church"), then Scottish headwear will not be required.
There's a MacMillan armiger that marches with the Clan Macpherson men every year at our annual gathering and rally in Badenoch. He always looks very well turned out in a variation of the MacMillan dress tartan, brownish tweed 'Argyll' jacket and waistcoat, full-mask badger sporran, and mustard coloured hose. He's a wonderful chap and I wish I had a photo or two of him at the march on hand...I might, so give me a wee minute, as this would be a great example for you!
Best of luck and be sure to let the rabble know what you decide!
Cheers,

So, give me a clue here. What is Tartan Day? Is a ceremonial thing with perhaps a religious ceremony? An excuse for a party? A march with bands playing? A thing that you chaps do "over there"? I have never heard of it"over here". I have no idea what to advise, I am afraid.

Harold,
I was able to locate a photo of the MacMillan armiger, Stuart Roderick MacMillan, but he his in evening attire. This photo was taken at our Friday evening ball in Kingussie during the 2007 Clan Macpherson Gathering and Rally - he is the chap on 'our' right.
This may not be of much help, but on a quick sidenote, what is intriguing is the variation of this particular version of the MacMillan dress tartan - it appears as if some of the smaller, vertical and horizontal stripes are much darker in colour as opposed to the more common/modern MacMillan dress sett. I do know for a fact that Stuart informed me that he is indeed a MacMillan, yet his wife is a Macpherson (hence the reasoning for attending the gathering) and that his tartan is a variant of an old MacMillan dress.

Harold,
Pretend the kilt does not exist and put together the rest of your ensemble with your own idea of style, then slip the kilt underneath it all and look to see if you feel any adjustments need be made (probably not). As long as nothing in your outfit is lime green or optic yellow or hunter's safety orange you should do fine. You don't have to do a matchy matchy thing but just feel comfortable in what you do choose to wear.
Have fun.
