davedouglaselectronics.com in Toronto, anyone?
Has anyone any experience with this firm? They have a very attractive website and I (almost desperately) need a
new laptop, but they have no BBB listing and I have not figured out how to get useful info from the Chamber of
Commerce.
As the justly honored Mr. Burns put it, "The best-laid plans o' mice and men . . ." I have just been taught that
redundancy helps reliability but does not assure it. For several years now I have maintained at least two computers
concurrently so I could use one to help repair another, but this week two have failed before I could repair either,
leaving me with nothing but a crippled seven-year-old Sony Vaio which has no optical drive and will boot from
nothing but its 60GB internal HD. It also has only a 10.5-inch screen, so I get to use not only my reading glasses
but a magnifier to read it.
My laptop died without warning. It is 2.5 years out of warranty and won't run anything but its own BIOS. The
desktop has failed somewhat gracefully but is no longer trustworthy; it is still in warranty but the round trip to the repair shop is likely to take three weeks.
Life is just full of challenge, isn't it?

Reason: remove redundancy

Sir, I know that this is the Misc. forum and non kilt related postings are allowed, but do you think this is the best place to pose a question about an on-line electronics store?
We, here, know kilts. Electronics? probably not so much.
So the staff must find a balance between the other interests our members have, with the fact that this is a kilt forum.
If a thread like this were reported to our staff, the Moderators would then find themselves having to decide if they should shut this thread down for a violation of the rules. I know that they would prefer not to be forced to make that call.
So perhaps a gentle reminder is in order. Perhaps one of the many electronic forums may give you much better answers than what you will find here.

Sir, my intent was not to ask for technical information about this firm's merchandise but instead to ask about their general policies: are they courteous, knowledgeable, trustworthy? I'm sure you have both made and answered such inquiries often; that is responsible behavior. But I did not say that explicitly, did I? Thus the misunderstanding is my responsibility and I apologize for it.
The irony of this situation is that shortly after making this post I decided that the delay inherent in ordering from Toronto would not be tolerable, so I ordered from a stateside vendor, making the post unnecessary. Regrettably I sometimes fail to shut up in time.
Best wishes,
Ian
