    Question Help in identifying tartans

I have a ton (well a lot) of fabric or kilts that I have not idea what the tartans are. If I take pictures of them can I get help in putting a name to the different tartans - those that are "market tartans, adaptations of family tartans, etc.????

David, I will build a collection of pictures of the tartans that I have. As I have never posted pictures what is your suggestion on how to best get them out in front of folks?

Here's how you can do it with a photobucket account:

I THINK there's a way to post them to your gallery and do it that way, but since I have a photobucket account myself, this is generally how I do it.

Image Shack is another option. It seems simpler to me than Photo Bucket, but either one works.

Here is a very helpful FAQ on how to post photos here at XMarks:

If you post up close photos showing one full repeat of the tartan design there shouldn't be any problem identifying the tartans.

Thanks for the pointers - I was showing my grand daughter what I was doing and she said "Grandad, here is how!" and showed my how to create an album. Here is a link to it. I have only one picture in there so far, more to come. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/m...artans-i-have/

    Thanks Again,

    Regards,

    Bob

Murray of Atholl Dress is the closest I've found to this one... it's just missing the red stripe in the blue:

I searched the tartan registry for "dress" and went through all 19 pages and found nothing except for the Murray Atholl Dress.

    Rocky, Thanks for the response.

Hence I will tell folks it is an adaptation of a Murray. when asked what does that mean I can explain the missing red vertical and horizontal stripes.

One other thing I notice about that tartan is that the sett is not the same in the warp and weft. Look just outside the white parts. On the vertical stripes, there's a black line just outside the white. On the horizontal ones, it is not there.

*edited to add: This is quite common on commercial "plaid" fabrics, such as those used in flannel shirts. They generally resemble tartans, and are often made to look very close to well-known ones.
