    Rain in Scotland

I knew it had been raining a lot recently, but really!

Great Picture, Alex. You may have got rain down with you but it is dry up here. The midgies are just awful, quite the worst that I can remember, perhaps we could swap a few billion midgies for an inch or two of rain?

I am begining to be more thankful than ever that we bought a house on high ground and have a steeply angled roof.

Is there nothing that eats midgies, Jock - or have they all exploded due to over indulgence?

you do get special "Midge eater" machines that sort of suck em in and.. um eat them (don't sit too close) but they really just bring the general level of midges in a relatively small area down to a slightly more acceptable level.

I went to the lake district over the Jubilee weekend and there were even midges there... I don't remember there ever being midges in the lakes before (although I'm sure there must have been). It does suggest a higher than average population of the little blighters though.

The best thing may be to buy shares in Avon Skin-so-soft!

Pleater & Lime.(sounds like some sort of drink)

I have just returned from Fort William, where amongst other places, I had to visit the chemist. Whilst there the nice young lady at the till was telling all that cared to listen that they had already sold out of the extra and larger than usual delivery of Skin So Soft that had arrived this morning.

Pleater, I have had a stern word with the swallows, sand martins, bats, toads and frogs that they really must step up consumption of these pesky midgies, but they are talking about going on strike. They are quoting the terms of employment where estate staff were not required to eat salmon more than three times a week! Phuh, where will it all end?

I am sure the midges are quite terrible as you say, Jock, and if this brings any sort of consolation, I have been getting numerous mosquito bites whilst my wife and I attempt to enjoy our backyard deck - the wee buggers seem to love me!

And no preventative measure works for me; bug spray, little clip-on 'thingys' with bug repellent inserts, citronella candles, etc, none of it seems to do the job. If it was so warm, I'd be better off wearing a long-sleeve shirt, buttoned all the way up and with the collar flipped up, and trousers!

    Cheers,

Now I have a cartoon type image of the flying things being unable to achieve lift off, and the aquatic ones lying exhausted on lily pads and all of them roughly spherical and unable to do anything about the cheeky midgies doing circuits above their heads and blowing raspberries.

They are, I think, even worse than horse flies; though they inflict a nasty bite they tend to arrive singly and can be brushed off if you are quick, but the hordes of tiny biters are just exhausting. They seem to manage to fly even in the rain, dancing between the drops.
