FIRST Clan Gatherings?

In the run up to the 2009 Gathering there were pictures of much earlier clan gatherings. Pictures in black and white they were so old.

Does anyone here know when the early gatherings were?
Is there an earliest clan gathering like before 1600 or anything?
OK, where is the book on the history of clan gatherings?????

The Scottish Highland Games Association has listed on many of the individual games their history which is rather interesting.
