    Official Missouri tartan

I know at one point the St Andrews Society of St Louis was trying to get an official Missouri tartan approved by the state legislature, the "Show Me Tartan". Has anyone heard whether they were successful? I have done some searching and cannot find anything about it. I know that some of the rabble are connected in the tartan world and might know more than I can find.

Below is the tartan that was submitted as the winning design. It was, as the St Andrews site says

"The design is derived from four inspiring symbols of the state of Missouri, the Eastern Bluebird, the Missouri Mule, the Crescent Moon, and the Bear. The green and blue lines represent the fields, rivers, woodlands, streams, and Ozark Mountains of Missouri. The light blue, red, and white stripes represent the Eastern Bluebird and ideals found in our state flag: vigilance, justice, valor, and purity. The first band of brown represents the Missouri Mule, and therefore our steadfastness, sturdiness, and industriousness. The narrow band of light blue crossing the Ozark Mountains represents the Crescent Moon, reminding us of our potential for prosperity and our status as the second state to be forged out of the Louisiana Purchase. The second band of brown represents the Grizzly Bear, a symbol of strength. Hence, this pattern stands for: vigilance and justice, valor, purity, steadfastness, hope, and strength."

Only thing I can see is that its not on the Wikopedia list of state tartans yet...but then neither is the Pennsylvania tartan and I'm pretty sure that's official.

I've been trying to sometime now to find out the status of this tartan; ironically, we, The Scottish St. Andrew's Society of Springfield, were just beginning to work with some folks associated with the Warrensburg Games to get the General Assembly to recognize our own Missouri tartan. When we heard about St. Louis's efforts, we decided to support them, but since then, there has been nothing about the progress of this particular tartan.

Our Missouri tartan, btw, was based on the Sutherland tartan, in honour of the late Alex Sutherland, a native of Leith, Scotland who immigrated to the US and settled in St. Louis in the 1990s. Alex was known throughout the state as a wonderful folksinger and promoter of Scottish culture. When he passed away (far too young) in 2007, we wanted a way to honour his contributions to the Scottish-American community in Missouri.

If the St. Louis folks aren't going to follow through with this, it might be up to the SGF Scots to step up.

That sounds like a marvelous idea!! I am not, as of yet, an official member of the St Andrews Society of Kansas City (application is in the mail as we speak) but I can't find anything about it on the KC site. I am eager to see what I can do personally to get this thing pushed through (an official Missouri tartan).

If St Louis has dropped the ball, then I'd be more than happy that Springfield picks it up and runs it through to the end with a beautifully designed tartan.
