    bonnets & "poms"

    a question for the knowledgeable... what is the significance of the"pom" on the Balmoral and Glengarry hats? Style or function?

    It is called a toorie. It may have once been used as a decorative way to bunch the loose ends of yarn when the bonnet it knitted (although I'm not sure if that's really true). Mainly, though, it's just a traditional bit of decoration with no real use or significance. Some people don't like them, but I think they help make the bonnet stand out as a distinctly Scottish hat.
