    What kind of jacket?

My wife and I are going to a New Year's Eve murder mystery dinner and I am going to wear my kilt. It's one of those events where some people wer tuxes and others wear jeans. My question is about what kind of jacket to wear. Right now I only have regular sport coats. Is that appropriate to wear? I have one kilt - it's a Douglas modern tartan.

Thanks - I look forward to more opportunities to wear it.

Question, if you were not wearing a kilt what would you wear? How close can you come to this look if you wear a kilt? It sounds like you don't have a PC or an Argyle Jacket if you would go tuxedo or a suit and tie. Do you have a nice "V" neck sweater that would go with you kilt? The kilt and a "T" shirt or knit shirt would be similar to jeans, kilt sweater and nice shirt a little more formal and the kilt, sweater and tie for a semi-formal look.

A regular suit/sports jacket normally hang to low in the back and looks "bad" with the kilt pleats.

A kilt is just an article of clothing don't get hung-up with having to have the proper outfit, go with what you have and do what feels best for you.

Regular sport coats are just too long for a kilt. If you can't get a kilt jacket or do a conversion you would be better off with a sweater, say a V-neck and tie. But it depends on how dressy you and your wife want to be.

With a kilt, jackets look best if the bottom of the jacket in near the bottom of the fell of the kilt. The fell is the part of the pleats that are sewn down. You don't want the jacket covering the pleats. Any style jacket works fine, depending upon the look you are going for, as long as the length is about right. Besides kilt jackets folks wear bomber jackets, Ike jackets and Levi jackets depending upon the occasion.

Or you can just wear a nice tweed sport coat and don’t worry about the length for now. There is a time and place to make improvements in your kilt wardrobe.

Here are some ideas...or just search the site for tweed or jackets.

If you want to go formal that is another topic. There is a recent thread on going formal on the cheap if you want to go that direction.

Here is another good thread http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-attire-46888/

If you feel you have to wear a coat, a "regular sports coat" is OK, but because of its length, it will obscure the top portion of your kilt. Such a coat is not normally considered Scottish attire, but most folks won't know or care.

Instead, and since the level of formality is "open", I suggest wearing a nice sweater and, if the weather is cold a short leather jacket (if you have one) for warmth. In any case enjoy the mystery.

Here's a link to one of the coolest threads we've had here on Xmarks. Scoll down and check out our member RAF wearing an ordinary tweed sportcoat with his kilt, and it looks great.

Goes to show how somebody can break the "rules" and make it work, if it's done right

Or if you don't want to read the thread, here's RAF himself, showing how cool an ordinary tweed jacket can look with a traditional kilt

That would be members of the NorCal Rabble I believe in San Francisco hosting a visiting Xmarks member. I didn't yet have my kilt so I was not in attendance. I just thought the photo did a good job of showing how a variety of jacket styles work as long as they are about the right length.

Thanks for the link to that thread. Not sure how I missed it but I had not seen it before. Great ideas on how to use ones existing wardrobe with a kilt.
