    Question on Macpherson Hunting

    Hi All,

looking for the right 16 oz. fabric for my new Macpherson Hunting kilt - in planning - I saw there was one I haven't heard of before.
Among the well known ancient and modern variants woven by Lochcarron and House of Edgar I found a fabric from MM Jura range where the grey is replaced by white. It is called "Macpherson Hunting Dress"... It might be "Macpherson of Pitmain" but why should it be called differently...?!

Is this an official Macpherson tartan?
I couldn't find any information at Tartan Authority or Tartan Register.
So, if you know more about it please let me know.

    Thanks and greetings, Tom

By the way...same thing with a Tartan called "Stewart Highland" also from MM Jura range. Just an invention of Marton Mills???

It is, to the best of my knowledge, an official tartan, though my friend Craigdhubh is a MacPherson and would be able to say with certainty.

Personally, I prefer the look of the grey variant. I've seen many a fine kilt in this tartan.

Stewart Highland is not the real name of that tartan. It is ACTUALLY the National Millenium tartan:

    Ah, thanks Rocky...I see.
So this tartan has nothing to do with Stewart at all?!

    Hi guys!

After some research I found out that there is no "Macpherson hunting Dress" tartan as offered by MM.
The tartan in question was mentioned in "Old and Rare Scottish Tartans" as "Macpherson".
It is the same sett which is called "Macpherson of Pitmain".
The same sett with grey instead is called "Macpherson hunting". .
So it seems to be another nice possibility to wear this tartan as alternative to the red Macpherson or the hunting tartan. (A little confusing that MM calls it "Hunting Dress"...)
The MM sett is a little bit bigger than the Lochcarron Hunting ancient.
So I might think of this as first Macpherson kilt...

By the way...I found another tartan which is also a Macpherson clan tartan...does anybody know this tartan as a usually worn tartan in the clan?

Just going by memory - but pretty sure your first pic is the same as some tartan cloth at the Macpherson clan tent at the Las Vegas, NV highland games today. Have some Macpherson blood in me and stopped to chat and noticed the tartan - which was new to me and nice looking but got distracted and never asked about it. If it was the same - and I'm pretty sure it was - it was official enough to grace a clan tent.

All they had at the tent today was the Red & Formal. I even commented that it was odd there wasn't a Hunting there.
