I know black leather kilts are not for everyone, but I've been building them for the past ten years and it's one one of the mainstays in the RKilts arsenal.
I handpick the hides. I go through bundles at my suppliers finding the right size hide that will give the best looking kilt.

Generally it takes three sides to make the leather RKilt. The hides I pick range in size from 24sqft to 30 sqft. With an average weight of 2 ounces/ sqft.
this one is a large one the 30.1 represents 30 .25 sqft.
Out of these hides I manage to get 7 linear yds of leather to make a leather RKilt.
this photo shows the pleats top stitched and laid out ready for assembly.
Now I have to stitch the fell and assemble. More on this project a little later.
Cheers
Robert
