Anybody by the surname STEPHEN or MATHIESON out there?

I am descended (on my mother's side) from the STEPHEN family, a relatively insignificant branch of the House of Gordon. The STEPHEN family is obscure enough that it isn't even recognized as an official sept, let alone having a tartan associated with it specifically.

Upon discovering a claim that the STEPHEN family had arrived off Aberdeen in the year 1010, I set about designing a tartan to commemorate the 1,000th year of recorded history in Scotland. I use the resulting tartan [ STEPHEN - MATHIESON tartan, SRT #10108 ] as my avatar (upper left hand corner). The tartan in the modern colour palette, used in the first weaving is also included at the bottom of the page.

The tartan was woven in 2009, and all of it has been sold to family members. I recently received a couple of emails from folks who are almost certainly related asking if tartan was available. So far, I have unconfirmed interest in about 15m of fabric.

I am actively planning a second weaving of the tartan, possibly in an ancient colour palette.

Oh yes, I should explain the name of the tartan. It came about because the marriage of William Stephen [b.1832] and Margaret Mathieson [b.1835] was the farthest that family members were able to trace the genealogy with any certainty.

Relatives include Donald Smith [Lord Strathcona] and George Stephen [Lord mount Stephen].

A full description of the tartan can be found on the Scottish Register of Tartans website.

Anyone interested in this custom weave should pm me or you can respond to this thread.

EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.
