Cool Hose Colour Information and Recent Photos

    Hi guys.

So I have been trying to increase my hose collection as I wear kilts everyday and there never seems to be enough hose!

It seems, at least to me, best to match the hose and the shirt/t-shirt/jacket; I am still missing a few colours. Can anyone help me identify the names of the hose in the following photos, or sugest other hose colours that will also match the kilt/jacket:

Clearly, the above hose are a sage/moss green - but that is just a guess.... They certainly do not match the forest, or bottle greens that I have. Can anyone name the colour of tweed jacket pictured above whilst we are at it - I know there is not much to go on?

HRH The Duke of Rothesay is wearing the same outfit with two different pairs of hose here. On the left I think he is wearing a Lovat blue Lewis hose, and on the right some sort of green. The green on the right seems to match his jacket. I have a jacket similar to His Royal Highness's, which was posted on eBay as Lovat blue - it is not, and is more greeny (though a tad more bluey than the one in the photo above). I am looking for hose to match, as it seems to me that the Lovat blue hose is not a great match for this jacket; it even looks a little odd on His Highness.

Here is my new USAKilts casual Murray of Atholl. My Lovat blue hose match nicely, though sadly, I have no Lovat blue t-shirt! I do have a number of green t-shirts that match the green in the kilt (grass green? Ancient green?) So can anyone name the green I need to be asking for to match? This green is the same green as the green in my Ancient Roxburgh Red, so am I right in suggesting ancient green?

Many thanks for the advice - Oh, and just a couple of recent photos:

New fashion purple jacket! I bought this as it matches the Pride of Scotland kilt nicely. This is in its original form, but I have since tailored it to a highland cut (to match the military patrol jacket I have as they were very similar in style).

Braving a freak spring snow storm - the snow was fine, the -20c and cutting 40mph wind was vexing (especially as the wander home was 6 miles long).

A slightly better day (only two days later) on a hike. I am really fond of the BD. I am also looking for a Khaki coloured hose - the same as the jacket. Does anyone know if these are made anywhere?

I am not sure that I can give you exact colour names for the hose you are showing in the pictures for several reasons, of which two are; my computer screen may distort the colours and secondly one person's green, for example, may well be another's bottle/tartan/dark/rifleman/archer green. As you are no doubt aware the hose do not have to match any other part of your attire. Some people like this matching idea and in fact given the numbers of colours in a tartan, the tweed, the shirt, tie that you happen to be wearing on any given day, then there is a fair chance that the hose will match with something even if no thought is given at all to the matter. OK we can get all wound up about colours but in reality the best option is wear what colour hose that you like and its a reasonable chance that all will look just so and over time you will develop a "favorites" list and ignore the rest.

Those appear to be Harris hose from the House of Cheviot in Loden. Note that the Loden color in current production is somewhat darker than this. (This picture is a few years old). The Harris range is not stock supported in Loden in any case, though you can get the color in some of their other hose rangers, including Rannoch.

Those are not Lewis hose, nor are they made by House of Cheviot. I'm not sure where HRH has his hose made, but no doubt they are bespoke. You can get very similar ones made by Almost Unwearoutable in Northumberland. House of Cheviot has a small range of a similar check topped pattern, though not in these colors.

Yes, ancient green Lewis hose would go very nice with that tartan.

I can certainly recommend both House of Cheviot and Almost Unwearoutable. All of my kilt hose with the exception of Argyll style tartan hose, come from them; Lewis, Rannoch, 8-ply Coquet.

    Cheers,

I personally feel your shirt looks just fine, picking up the red stripe in the kilt.

"My new USAKilts Casual Wallace with my University Hoodie (or 'bunny hug' to those in Sask!)."

I grew up in Saskatchewan and when the "hoodie" first came out they were referred to as "kangaroo jackets" because of the front "marsupial" pouch. Then again we also referred to "flipflops" as "thongs", which cause a few raised eyebrows today. Sort of like referring to a "fanny pack" in the UK.

We often get down to LA as we have a daughter there (as well as a son-in-law) and 2 Grandchildren.

What Price Glory have khaki hose. I own a pair.

Getting back to the OP, I get the impression you might be trying too hard to match exact shades? Trying to match dye shades from a hose manufacturer with dyes from a shirt, tie, or jacket manufacture sounds troublesome, at best.

I would think you could do just as well, and have much broader options available, by combining colors from the same FAMILY, without being exact. For example, in this recent shot, I wore claret hose to "match" with the mauve-ish shirt I was wearing...

Thanks for all the excellent advice, guys! It sounds like I now need to swing by a couple of places to check out hose options.

The self tie garters ar some of yours, via Rocky, Matt. I am particularly fond of them. I also really like the House of Cheviot hose - though the lewis are just a tad long in the shin.

I might try the blending of colour families, Ken - in fact, I gave it a bit of a whirl yesterday by mixing blues and greens - what do you think?

Along with all the excellent assistance you've already received do look at Wendy Keith Designs, she does supply bespoke hose to HRH The Duke of Rothesay.
    http://www.wendykeithdesigns.co.uk/
I have hose by her and they are the most comfortable and best looking hose I own. I particularly like the range of colours that she offers. The price for a pair is about £90 / $150. not for every day wear perhaps but well worth it for a special pair.
