For me, it was always the want to be near a mountain area. Second was near family.

So far it has been Colorado and Northern Arizona.

For me it has to be Northern New Hampshire (Jackson-North Conway) in the midst of the White Mountains. Gorgeous country, great family and wonderful friends and neighbors. I was never happier.

Though I've never "lived" in that area, I've spent countless weeks there vacationing (still go back every year), and couldn't agree more. If there was any kind of I.T. work there for me, I'd definitely move there.

Of the places I have actually lived, I'd put Sitka, Alaska right at the top of the list. I served there at the Coast Guard Air Station. I was helo flight crew, (HH-3F avionicsman) in 1981-82. Gorgeous place to spend a couple years, and the Coast Guard gave me opportunities and the means (helicopter) to see the most spectacular aspects of the area.

Up in northern Ontario, off the beaten track, at a family encampment after a day's canoeing. Small presqu'ile, other than the campfire no lights, comfortable.
Telling stories around the fire, remembering old days, old ways.
    Pipes would have made, sublime.

I love living in the the U.P. I live in Marquette which is right the middle of it all. It's a great little/big city and all you have to do is drive 10 minutes in any direction to get into the middle of nowhere! It's got a great "tree to human ratio", very important for me.
