I'm looking at $ 600.00 to $ 800.00 before I break my bank.

It all depends what breaking the bank means to you. I will say that I have had much more success looking for one piece at a time instead of a package. Look around ebay and you never know what you might find.

Hag,
I guess it depends on what you mean with "breaking the bank" and whether you want quality products or cheap knock offs. Also when you say package, I take it you mean jacket, waistcoat, shirt, tie, sporran, etc. Rocky at USA Kilts has a premier kilt package for just over $1,100. Scotweb's essential Prince Charlie Kilt Outfit starts at $850.00 (+duty and lacks shirt and tie) There are some companies that sell on e-bay and you can definitely find cheaper packages (as low as $445.00), but one thing the rabble has taught me is that you get what you pay for. You can also look for used or ex-hire jackets, etc. I have pieced my outfits together. I have bought some used items on e-bay and ordered my day sporran from Donnie at Wyvern Leatherworks. I am fortunate to have a local shop where I have bought my kilts and my argyle jacket and waistcoat. I have decided to pay more for quality products that will outlive me. I am still a newbie and am learning more everyday. If you are looking for a true formal kilt package, I would stick with a wool 8 yd kilt and a black argyle or Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat from a reputable dealer. In the US most of us do not have black tie affairs that often so I chose a black argyle jacket which is more versatile and can still be used for black tie events (though some among the rabble may disagree.) I would start with those who advertise on this website. If you wait for a few more posts, I am sure that some of the rabble will impart even better advice.

Thanks Chaps it looks like I'll pay about $ 1,000 and up for a real good kilt package.

Again I think it is more economical to look around for pieces separately, it may take longer but the results are often better as you are not held to someone else's idea of what should and shouldn't be in a package.

When I was new to all this (not that I'm a "seasoned veteran" now) I looked at packages online quite a bit, and had I not found this forum, probably would have sunk a lot of money into one which had products I didn't really need.
For example, do you need a formal shirt, formal shoes, a bow tie, or a Sgian Dubh? Some of these things you may already have, and some you may not want (I used to believe Ghillie Brogues were "it" when it came to formal kilt attire, but I wouldn't wear them now, prefering patent leather Oxfords), also knife laws here being what they are, I can't be bothered with the hassle of a Sgian Dubh.
I'd first invest in a good kilt and jacket/waistcoat, and you'll find the other things seem to just appear in the post over time, usually while you're waiting for the kilt to be made .
Good luck, and welcome aboard!
Cheers,
Cameron
