commissioning ceremony - kilt appropriate?
I have been invited to the commissioning ceremony of the USS America, a U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship here in San Francisco on Oct. 11
As a former Navy man I am very excited by this prospect.
The dress code for men reads: informal, suit or jacket and tie. I would like to wear the outfit similar to this pic. I will probably wear my Stewart ancient hunting and not this Nova Scotia kilt nor these hose.
Do you think this is appropriate for this occasion? Should I wear a Glengarry or Balmoral with it?

I think what you are wearing is perfect Phil! I would consider keeping those hose with the Steward Ancient, I think they would look great! I am not a fan of the Balmoral or the Glengarry. For me, those two accessories, at least here in the States, push the kilt over the line to "The guy in the Scottish costume". I know, I know, there is that risk with wearing a kilt in general outwith the Highlands but again, for me, it is that little bit of extra that nudges it over the line.
Have a great time whatever you decide!

Hey friend!
I think it looks great. I agree with @MacMillans son about the topper. No hat. Hope you have a great time.

Another Aye.
And thanks for the shot of the Balclutha. I remember prowling that ship as a 13yo boy back in 1957...

I understand you are perfectly entitled to your opinion Brooke, however, I resepectfully disagree. Sure, traditional Scottish headwear may not be suitable for all occasions (think context, as well as for outdoor use only), yet I tend to believe that if one chooses to wear a Balmoral or Glengarry bonnet, it is far from appearing "costumey."
Phil, you look absolutely smashing in that pic, mate! I think your choice of attire would be well suited and appropriate. Well done.
Enjoy,

Wonderful opportunity. Depending on the formality of the ceremony from the officials, I would suggest a Glengarry if you decide for any head gear. Similar to the Garrison caps of other branches of US forces where the Balmoral is too far removed from the beret. Then again the Balmoral defines your attire. Or! did I just replay all the thoughts rolling around in your head and its why you posed the question in the first place. In conclusion, I don't expect there is a bad choice.
