    Another old tartan

I recently came across this picture of an old piece of tartan amongst the records of the late Jamie Scarlett. Unfortunately there is no accompanying information about the location or owner of the piece but nonetheless it's possible to tell a lot just from the photo. Who wants to have a go?

I am horrible with tartan id, but it looks sort of Frasier-ish or MacGillivray. I love the look and colors though!!

Do you suppose that it is slightly asymmetrical on purpose or unintentionally?

I don't think it is actually asymmetrical, though there are fine dark lines which are not centered on the slightly wider red band, if that's what you mean.

From what I see in the color and stripe patterns in this piece it is either asymmetrical or a large sett. Green on the left with no black border stripe and blue on the right with a black border stripe. The center square looks to be symmetrical. So to follow the pattern vertically at the top I would say it will go to green after the second red stripe but no idea where it will go from there.

There is no black, just red, blue and green.

Some of the apparent anomolies have been picked up but they have not been followed through. Are they actually they appear to be and what else do they tell you?

It looks like the blue ( water ?? ) surrounds the green ( land ?? ).

It might to some but the idea of symbolism in tartan is a very recent concept.

Here's another picture of the piece but this time showing only one side in greater detail. It may help in deciphering some of the elements.

Regrettably there are only these two pictures and as I said in the OP, no information as to the source so a detailed examination is not possible at this stage.
