jacket advice
I shall soon need a jacket for formal occasions, I remember Hamish saying charcoal was a good colour to go with kilts, but can anyone recommend a supplier of Argyle Jackets at resonable prices?

Are there any kilt rental shops nearby? You may be able to buy an off-the-rack used rental jacket for a reduced price. I was able to buy a black Argyle for half the price of a new jacket, and the wear certainly doesn't show. It may not be as crisp as a new jacket, but I saved some money. I don't know if rental shops would have colours other than black, however, but it's probably worth looking into.
Andrew.

I am going to just get a regular Jacket altered.
I like the Traditional look but For me i always try to add my own touch of style to an outfit. I am currently scowering the thrift stores and whatnot for a tweed style jacket in a nice charcoal or even a green! i will just take it to one of the many military alteration shops around here and get them to shorten the waist abit more like a military evening dress jacket. That is my cheap Idea.

If my kilt making project goes well perhaps a jacket will be the next project.

Now, Graham, it all depends upon what you mean by "formal"! Formal to me means Evening Dress/Black Tie, in which case a Prince Charlie, a black barathea Argyll or Crail jacket will fit the bill perfectly. [A photo of my Prince Charlie can be seen on page 6 of my album - link below - and one of my Crail jacket is on page 2.]
If you are thinking along the lines of a Charcoal grey TWEED Argyll jacket, well, that would be best worn with a tie and constitutes smart day wear.
As for price: I'd say that quoted by Hector Russell (David's link) is pretty much average for a tweed Argyll. You might do a little better by surfing around but somehow I doubt it, if you are buying new! My Charcoal Argyll was off-the-peg and cost £195 last year, but my Lovat Green was a bespoke jacket and cost £220 six years ago! [A photo of my Charcoal Argyll is on page 6 of my album, and one of the Lovat Green Argyll on page 5.]
By the way, tweed day jackets are not very often hired out so you might have some difficulty in finding ex-hire ones being sold off at knock-down prices.
(NB: Tweed day jackets (Argylls) used to be available only in Lovat Green or Lovat Blue, but in recent years Charcoal has come on the scene and is so much more versatile as it 'goes' with any tartan. Black Argylls are really too formal for day wear and should be kept for less stuffy evening dress occasions.
I hope this helps rather than confuses!

Thanks all for the advice, Hamish, Blu's photo is exactly what I'm looking for, better than I've found in fact, I wanted a plain jacket without all the "militarialistic" additions to cuffs and shoulders.
That's as formal as I would ever get.
Where did that jacket come from blu?
