Tartan shorts / underwear ? (MacGregor tartan - 1920s/40s) Rare?

    Evening all.

Looking for information on these tartan wool 'shorts / underware' (or do they have a particular name? ). Part of the evening set comprising of 10 pieces.

'Make Do & Mend' looks to be in full force with a number of repairs. Damn moths!! I'm loving the cinch back with buckle fastening - I'm sure this design relates to a certain era (Thinking back to the Levi jeans with the same design). The belt hoops are also fitting with age. The lining suggests they were hand made and there is a 6 button fly. Quite fancy I have to say !

A certain internet search on 'Prima' buckles gave me the following : 'Third Reich Military outfitters / tailors - The famous Prima claw buckle used as a waist adjustment buckle on the rear of the army Mod 37 (1937) enlisted straight leg trousers'.

After reading this I was able to check a British Army uniform around the late 30s, only to find the same 'Prima' buckle attached to a waistcoat. This should help me date the item...

I'm yet to find any modern re-makes of the shorts. Or are they still in production? Answers on a postcard please.

    Warm Regards, Gil

    Intriguing

No answers for you yet.... I did a quick search amongst historical sewing blogs and that style is unusual thus far.
No bagginess or fall at the front
No fly or placket under the buttons
    Is it a woven fabric?
Also do any more learnered xmarkers know what the loops at the top of the waistband are for? I've never seen that in men's underwear, only on outer garments (usually for children) to attach a bodice.
I'm throughly intrigued and excited to learn more.

No postcard so here's a Kookaburra in my garden

Kilt underwear as shown in your picture was not uncommon, in various styles, until at a guess but say the mid 1950's, they, two pairs, arrived with one's new kilt. Not always tartan and wool ones were the most common and the most uncomfortable. Silk ones being absolute bliss. I have not seen or heard of new ones for twenty years or more.

    Hello .

Firstly thank you for taking the time to post . Very good of you. Especially on such a fine looking day ! #turnsuptheheating

With regards to the 'Drawers' there is no fall or bagginess at the front to note. The buttons looks to be sewn onto fabric.
The material matches that of the kilt . I assume is wool . The measure approx 29" waist if I remember rightly - rise 14" - inside seam 9"

I think it be beneficial to all if I upload the kilt . I've teased long enough . I'm sure it will set alarm bells ringing , as to what age we are looking at .

Loving the old catalogue btw . I didn't think to search the forum for previous links . Great detective work there . ' tips hat '

I look forward to further comments . I really appreciate the help on offer.

What a fantastic thread that turned out to be . I'll be sure to dissect from the multiple comments to add to my description . Big thank you to all who contributed back in 2012. *

As it is quite late in the day I shall leave posting the kilt until the morning . It won't be long before we can put all the pieces together I'm sure . Let's hope I don't get too attached , to a point where I'm unwilling to part . It deserves a new home . Sadly the drawers are just a tad too small .

Have a pleasant day / evening all .

    - Gillan.

P'raps get some made, matching tartan in P/V for comfort?
I've not had much experience with P/V.

I have to confess that I am not even sure what PV feels like.

    It's my understanding it's mostly itch-less.
