Re-weave of the oriignal 79th tartan

On a closed thread I mentioned that I was working on a re-weave of the original 79th setting. Here's the result.

The picture is a bit bright and the actual cloth is darker. Elliots woven the cloth and Robin did a good job matching the shades and setting of the original piece(centre).

    Peter,
That is some beautiful cloth. Having recently been the recipient of Elliot-woven tartan, I can attest to its quality.

This and your paper on the tartan of Lord Loudoun's Highlanders certainly dispells the idea that all 18th c. tartan was all woven in lighter, softer colors!

The red in that photo appears to be the red-orange used in "ancient" colourways nowadays. Is that just the photo? What sort of red does the original have?

Also, what is the sett size?

Thanks! It's beautiful. That's long been one of my favourite tartans.

Richard, the photo is a little bright, the one of the original specimen shown in my paper on the 79th setting is much closer to the actual shades. The red is darker and lies somewhere between old and modern shade.

The original specimen has a 9" full repeat. This sits in the middle of the range of sett sizes woven by Wilsons; that said, I've never found a coarse kilt setting for their 79th cloth and that may, assuming that there was such a thing, have matched this early setting.

Plate 1? - that's an early Wilsons' specimen.

Plate 2 - is the original 79th cloth.
