Representing Scotland at my son's school

Every year my son's school hosts an "international night" where each class spends several weeks researching a different nation or country, it's culture and history. Then as a final presentation the public is invited to the school where each classroom is decorated to represent that nation. Export items, and cultural or historical items as well as educational storyboards are displayed and when possible samples of food associated with that nation or country is served. Also national dress is worn either by the students or by a parent when available and appropriate. By chance my son's class will be representing Scotland this year. I don't know how well haggis would go over but I am extremely excited to attend kilted as is my son. We will do our very best to represent accurately traditional highland dress and use the opportunity to educate both ourselves and others.

While I am very fond of it, I would suggest oat cakes or short bread rather than haggis.

Sounds great. I used to teach high school history and would wear my kilt at least one day each year. Some of the kids really got it and some didn't.

Sounds like a great experience for the students . Food for thought ... if possible , invite a piper to participate in your son's classroom when the public and parents visit .

My wife had the same thought. Any suggestions on how to locate a Piper in mid Michigan?

I told my wife about your upcoming appearance. She is a teacher and runs the afterschool daycare program in our district. She loves your idea but advises you to check with teachers regarding food allergies. It seems that student allergies are on a sharp rise. Have fun. Larry

I would start by asking the Police and Fire departments in the area. One of them is apt to have a pipe band, or a member who is part of some regional pipe band. Otherwise, the folks at Henderson's in Traverse City might be able to point you toward players in the state.

I know Kalamazoo has a pipe band, perhaps a Piper would be willing to drive to play your event, I'm sure someone in the band lives between you and Kalamazoo. Try contacting them and ask about local pipers
