First night kilted!
I was asked to play the pipes at a fundraiser for the school where I teach. I stood on a pier and played as the boats pulled up. I wore my new USA Kilts 5-yard with sporran, belt, white shirt, and lovat blue hose and tie.

This tartan is the unofficial USAF tartan (I retired in 2006), and the pin is a WWII enlisted Army Air Corps aviation pin. I maintained aircraft, so I chose this as a way to remember/honor those who also served.
I received very nice comments from almost everyone. I think the best part was that I just felt good and was able to enjoy the evening. Wearing a kilt is totally new to me, but last night gave me confidence to wear it in other settings as well.

Well done. You may someday not need an event to don a kilt. I started with renn fairs and now I'm kilted at least 3 days a week.

That is a great story, I'm sure you'll get to wear it in different situations. Lovely pin as well.

Thank you for your service.
I think you will find that over time you will become increasingly comfortable wearing the kilt. I find that ceremonial or special events lend themselves well to the kilt. However, I have ALSO found that over the years I have come to realize that any day I wake up is an even worth celebrating ![Toast](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/toast.gif)
Keep enjoying!

Thanks for your service! I shared this with a friend who served in the USAF and who has recently adopted the kilt. The pin is awesome! How did your students/colleagues react to your piping?
I'm also a teacher; I'm curious to know if your district has any regulations regarding the kilt. I found out recently that mine does not!

My students (grade 6 English) don't say much about the piping. I think they are used to it! However, I am scheduled to play for our elementary grade kids soon, and that should be fun. Their questions about the kilt will be funny. My colleagues and the parents are much more interested.
I am not sure about district regulations, but my school is private, and they are fine with the kilt. I think they are going to ask me to play at more events. If I am lucky, I will start getting paid to play at some gigs outside of school.

I brought in some of my SportKilts for TartanDay a few weeks back, and I found that the boys, none of whom knew whether or not they were Scottish, were really into it. They wanted to try them on (over trousers, of course), and were very excited by the "manliness" they felt wearing the kilt. The girls...they weren't into it. I suspect they may not yet be mature enough to deviate from their learned ideas of what a boy ought to dress like. It made for some fun, diverting class discussion outside of our rather dreary Frederick Douglass stuff (we're following the New York State modules). I hope you get to have some fun conversations with your student as well!
Good luck with future piping!
