    Advice on kilt jacket

I have 3 kilts, and wear one at every opportunity. Awhile ago, I purchased a Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat, and very much look forward to wearing it to a few, upcoming, formal affairs. I would like to purchase a less formal jacket, so that I could wear the kilt to other, less formal, events. There are a multitude of choices, not only types of jackets, but also vendors. I purchased one of my kilts from USA Kilts, and was very pleased with the quality of merchandise, and the customer service. I would be inclined to purchase from them again; however, I'm on a somewhat limited budget, and their jackets, while I'm sure are of top quality, are a bit pricey. Has anyone had good experience with buying a kilt jacket from another source, especially recently? Also, has the exchange rate with the British Pound, made purchasing from an overseas vendor more attractive? All comments/suggestions are welcome.

I purchased a jacket and waistcoat from Kilt Society (formerly Buyakilt). I'm very happy with my purchase, the only thing is a lot of places say for Americans order one size larger. I should have just ordered the size I wear, I will be have things taken in a bit.

I have only 1 tweed argyle jacket. I would LOVE to have several more and even have a couple I would like to convert (or have converted professionally).

I fully understand trying to keep it within a reasonable budget. I bought my tweed jacket from USA Kilts and would recommend them.

If you purchase from overseas and are concerned about size, I would err on the side of too large rather than too small. You can always have it tailored down to fit properly, but if it's too tight you don't have many options.

Have you considered eBay or something similar? I found a few very nice tweed jackets all for under $50 US. I wear them ALL the time when not kilted. I got them for two purposes. I needed them for a brief period, but also wanted something that I could convert.

If you are talented with sewing you could attempt the conversion yourself and have the satisfaction of doing it. I am not sew (ha!... pun!) inclined. I will happily pay a professional tailor to modify my jackets for wear with a kilt. I am pretty sure that will still be less than a brand new one made to my measurements.

    Best of luck!

Some converted tweed jackets turn out ok, but from what I have seen most are marginal. Save your coins and buy a good quality kilt jacket that fits. It will be a worthwhile investment. Meanwhile wool sweaters work well.
