    Regimental Blackwatch Kilts

Does anyone know if the regimental Blackwatch Kilts are wool? And does anyone know their quality? The UK Army Surplus Store has a couple in stock and they're cheap if they're good wool.

If they are the real deal. Yes, they will be made of wool-----what else did you think that they were made of? Yes, they will be of good quality. What condition they will be in depends on their age and how they have been treated. Remember until 1940, battles were fought by men wearing the kilt, but I doubt that many kilts of that era are about now. Nevertheless, the military are not known for being too careful with their kit, so a kilt in a new unused condition is likely to be a fairly rare occurance. If you can find one in tip top condition and it fits you properly, then you have a real gem.

Does this look legit? If it's a good deal I'll probably snag it because it is my waist size.

That is a kilt from the current Royal Regiment. I have one and have handled about 6 others. They are very nice kilts for the price, and if you have a smaller waist, they are usually available. I will state that they are not as well made as those of 40 or more years ago, and they are not as heavy of a wool as they used to be. These are about 16oz (which is a nice heavy weight), but not the real heavy thick stuff that was used in the old units. This kilt will be box/roll pleated and not knife pleated. It is machine stitched and not hand-sewn like the old ones. I also think the internals are not of the same build and quality as they used to be. This all said, it is a great deal at £110. You can not purchase 16oz wool tartan in that length for that price. Final note... the tartan on these is Government 1A. It has a slightly lighter and brighter green in it than the standard "Black Watch" or Government Sett 1.

Does "cannot purchase" imply something is fishy or that it's a great deal?

Not fishy at all. I am not sure who has the MOD contract for weaving, but I suspect that the cost of the fabric is not nearly as high as what most of us all pay, even at trade rates. For that price, I would think you will be happy with the kilt, I know I am. Read all the measurements and realize it may be a bit higher waisted than you may be used to. Personally, I like that.

Wish I had seen this a couple days ago when I was a bit more sure about money. Is this a deal of a lifetime or can I rest easy if I don't pull the trigger?

I think you are safe to pass if you don't have the money at the moment and wait. Very likely, if you are size 34 waist or less, there will be more available somewhere. I believe I purchased mine for less than £100 about 3 years ago. I have had, in my hands, 4 at one time. I altered a number of them for a pipe band. I actually re-built mine after less than a year of wear to make it a bit more to my liking. I altered the fit slightly, but in a new stabilizer, canvas, and lining. With all of that, it is now VERY nice.

Thanks Isaac. I think you're right, I'll pass. I could afford it but its a stress I don't want right now. Moreover shipping would be heck because I'm moving before it'd be able to get here. I got a bit swept up because it is within 1 inch of being my exact measurements, but then again I assume they are all standard measurements based on the waist size, so finding one again should be an issue ya?
