It looks like a kettlebell on a chain...I have never seen anyone use a chain for that exercise.

At first I thought it looked like he had some unholy gas but on closer inspection it looks like some form of hammer throw (see the ball poking out from under his kilt attached to a rod).

As for the hose, many athletes I see in videos and photos from Highland games wear the kilt over whatever athletic attire they would normally wear, even at games like those in braemar, so I'd give him a pass.

No clue on the tartan though.

I'd assume. There's a crowd behind him and it's a grassy field. Though I don't recognize the event. But I'm not an expert in that regard.

I don't believe this is a traditional athletic event , looks like he is throwing a bowling ball between his legs while standing on a barrel .

I think the tartan is Heritage of Scotland .

I found this with a google search for "highland games standing on barrel."

"A competitor wearing a kilt and standing on a barrel throws a bowling ball between her legs during the “Brigaball” contest at the annual Bundanoon Highland Gathering, showcasing traditional Scottish events, held in the town of Bundanoon, located southwest of Sydney, April 9, 2016. Ah, and here is a description of the picture from the OP (google search for brigaball):

"A competitor throws a ball between his legs during the 'brigaball' contest at the 36th Bundanoon Highland Gathering"

And beyond this Google doesn't provide any other references to "brigaball" so one might assume it is a unique invention of the games at Bundanoon.

Awesome FossilHunter! I have never heard of brigaball- and the websearches dont offer much other than just a couple of pics. Maybe it is a regional game. I would like to know more! Thanks for your input!

MacGumerait- thanks for the tartan id! Heritage of Scotland is very nice- i believe that tartan has now made my list of want to buy!

Phew, glad you found the event, for a moment there I thought they were showing "when vasectomies go wrong".
