I'm assuming you're talking about the 3 extra tassels mounted just under the cantle? The seller says he's told that they make it an officer's sporran. Has anybody here ever heard of that? To me, they look like something plucked from a throw pillow.

I didn't see that seller claim. What nonsense! Yes, an Officer is going to take an Other Ranks sporran and stick cheap tassels (from the corners of a pillow as you say) on it.

Officers of the Argylls wore badger-head sporrans.

I see fairly often on Ebay vintage sporrans which have had "aftermarket" alterations, additions, or missing bits.

It's usually with military ORs' sporrans because they were made in large quantities and were widely available to civilians (just as today).
