    Davis/Davidson Clan Tartan Help

Im a newbie to this. My Grandfathers name was Davis and Grandmother was a Calhoun. I have traced our family of Davis back quite of ways to Ulster Scot/Irish Region. My question is. I keep getting different colors on my Family Tartan. Does anyone have info on the correct Colors. Thanks

I'm not sure I understand the question

Are you asking about the difference between the Davis tartan and the Davidson tartans?

Are you asking about the difference between the Davidson tartan and the Davidson of Tulloch tartan?

Are you asking about there being more than one Davidson tartan?

There is a Welsh tartan for people with the Davis/Davies surname. However, I believe that the Welsh tended to settle close to Wexford, rather than in Ulster. If you're sure (or strongly suspect) that your family is Scottish in origin, Davidson seems like a more likely bet than Davis.

The Davidsons of Tulloch appear to be a subset of the Davidsons. (All Davidsons of Tulloch are Davidsons. But not all Davidsons are Davidsons of Tulloch.) Since you haven't tied your family line back to a specific location in Scotland, then Davidson would be the more likely bet.

Like most clans, the Davidsons appear to have more than one official tartan. And even among the official tartans, there can be multiple color variations (modern, ancient, muted, weathered). Choosing between them is a matter of your personal taste. But if you want the most frequently used Davidson tartan, it's probably the one displayed on clan websites (or clan society websites).

Thanks for the info. Some of our older family members have traced our family back to the Ulster Region. They have found out that we have a lot of Scottish family and some that was in Ireland I have found thru family members that our family started as Davidson. Im taking that somewhere down the line it turned into Davis. But I did see the different Tartans and figured it was a personal choice. That helps me out. My thing was that I wanted to wear the colors from our Family and not just something random.

Since there may be several tartan colors in that family to choose from, you may find one that fits your tastes and still have the connection to the clan. Keep us informed of your choice.

    Hello!
I am fairly active in the Davidson Clan Society of North America, and you can find a good bit of information on the clan on our website https://clandavidson.org/. One page of the website includes information on the several tartans we have: https://clandavidson.org/the-clan/our-tartan/. The Davidson of Tulloch is not as hard to find as the website makes it seem, and is worn by a number of members. The most common seen at Highland Games is the Davidson Ancient, often in Marton Mills PV. I have never seen the Double Davidson or Davidson of Tulloch Dress "in the wild".
