I agree, Salado is one of my favourite ones. It's about a 3-hour drive for me, and I usually just make a day trip of it. If you're going to stay overnight, be advised that the lodging choices are limited, as are the dining choices.
But Kerrville has plenty of both.

Been to Salado the last 6 years. If you can afford it (yea, we're Scots) all the events have been worth it.
The clan turn out has been great, I'd guess 20 +/-.
Unfortunately its a "dry" event. But that doesn't mean a wee bit can't be had.
Last year's Tartan Dinner was a BBQ which was quite good.
Local lodging is sparse as are restaurants. Stagecoach Inn is now open (?).
On another note: Tobus - here in Fredericksburg we have BEER, WINE and GERMAN food (and some lodging) --
