LL Bean Scotch Plaid Products
Just a suggestion for the rabble to check out LL Bean's website and look at their "Scotch Plaid" products. They do nice flannel shirts and sleepwear in various tartans. They always have Blackwatch and some of the Stewart variants as well as a couple of fashion tartans of their own design. Each year they also do several clan/family tartans which they claim to authenticate with the STA. These do change so it is worth checking each year when their fall catalogue comes out. Over the years I have been able to get a couple of nice flannel shirts and a night shirt in my family tartan.

I was able to get a Buchanan pattern shirt from them last year. Or was it the year before?

Interestingly tartan shirts are rarely seen here in Scotland worn by the locals. Visitors from North America on the other hand, certainly appear to live in their tartan shirts, I am not sure if the tartan matches their particular Clan though. I do not know of anyone locally who wears tartan night attire either here. I also do not recall ever seeing them for sale. Yet another interesting trans-Atlantic divergence of trends perhaps?

Jock, if there is such a thing as Canadian dress it might well be a thick warm plaid shirt and blue jeans. If you are a Canadian of Scottish heritage what better way to embrace who you are than a warm shirt in your family tartan!

I suppose "our" cold is not as cold as "your" cold, nevertheless I think we see more than enough tartan about the place without needing more of it, in the form of shirts and pyjamas!

It's a North American thing, I do believe, the tartan wool shirts, jackets, and hats.
Back in the 18th century and into the 19th century IIRC vast amounts of tartan cloth were exported from Britain to the colonies for such uses.
The simple red & black tartan called Rob Roy there is called "Buffalo Plaid" here.
In modern Western Wear you see plenty of tartan and tartan-like wool jackets and waistcoats, as well as tweeds and wool woven in imitation of Native American weaving.
Just as an aside, my son spent two years in Washington (state) attending university. He left wearing cargo shorts, zorries, and aloha shirts... he returned wearing sturdy boots, heavy jeans, and layers of clothing over his upper body including wool tartan-like shirts. When in Rome, lend them your ears. No, that's not quite it...

Ah thank you for clearing that up Rex. I thought that the term of “Lumberjack” was more of a universal North American term , now I think that I can see that it’s more of a Canadian term. Am I right?

Well, I can confirm that it’s what a lot of folks would call it here in Ontario. I cannot confirm that it is or is not what it would be called elsewhere in North America.
