Headwear for a cold evening formal event
The HEAT in Las Vegas was no surprise, but now that we're in December, with a few upcoming events that might be considered formal, I'm wondering what should keep my glistening 78 y.o. pate warm outdoors if I'm wearing a Prince Charlie, dress sporran, and Ghillie Brogues?

A decent balmoral, diced or not, formal or not, might be worth a thought.

There is no tradition of wearing hats indoors, certainly not in the UK. If you were at a non-Scottish smart indoor event, would you wear a hat?

I think he needs something for outdoors at night. It can be very chilly at night out there in the winter. (By "out there" I mean somewhere out past Cleveland. How's that for acting provincial? )

Robert Mackie Balmorals of Scotland have a fine reputation.

Are the Robert Mackie balmorals still being made? I saw a lot of discussion online about them closing. The few dealers I can find online which claim to carry them either have only a few sizes listed or have everything as "out of stock".
Took a gamble on eBay, and now know that a size 57 is too small (probably a 59 will be good). There is a size 59 on eBay at ~$200 USD.

There was indeed some talk of them closing, but I heard "on the grapevine" that someone had taken over the Bonnet making business. How true that was, I have no idea.

The House of Tartan in Crieff has taken over Mackie bonnet production and they do a fine job.
