    Help need Ideas

The Egypt Shrine Highlanders, Krewe of Shamrocks and Krewe of Brigadoon are planning a Kilted Social on October 13th, 2007, It will be a Tartan Formal. I need some ideas on the center pieces for the tables which will be about 34. They need to be nice enough for a formal but inexpensive and easy to make. Please help me with ideas ......

Here's one idea. If you go to a craft or fabric store, you should be able to find two inch wide ribbon in tartan. Try to get the stuff with wire in the edges.

Cut a length of the ribbon, I would guess about 30 inches. Fold the ribbon back on itself about 6 inches from the end. Do this at both ends. Bring the creased ends together and you should get a circle above the ends. Push the circle down and you should get what looks like half a bow. Secure the circle to the creased ends using glue. Repeat with another piece of ribbon.

Lay the ribbons across each other at right angles and you should have something that resembles a bow. Secure the two with glue.

Purchase some heavy tea candle holders and candles to adorn the centres.

I have TRIED to draw a guide for this. Please excuse its crudeness.

    Good Luck!

I'm thinking, but I haven't come up with anything yet.

    Any tartan is OK..

    I am thinking about sandcastles...
There is a cake pan 9.25" x 9.25' x 4" it's a castle, maybe use plaster paris or sand with corn starch and water mixture. Maybe even a clear resin with parade beads inside the castle.

Or make a rock with a minature claymore coming off of it.

    Something with clan badges maybe

How about two desktop flags, the US and the Saltire? (Sort of like my avatar) We use that for our St. Andrew's Society's formal functions -- just make sure no one decides to take them home!

    Regards,

    Shriner,

For my wedding, we wanted something simple that wasn't terribly feminine and fit the whole Scottish/Irish theme.

We found galvanized pails for, I believe, $.99 each at Target. We took them to our florist, along with a roll of 2" wide Campbell tartan ribbon and had her make arrangements to match Dana's bouquet using the pails and the ribbon. This was mostly a lot of smaller flowers, like wild flowers, with thistle and heather.

I think the end result turned out well, and they ended up costing us most of $50 for the 10 tables. (I don't know exactly what she charged for them, but the total florist bill was $350 and that included two bouquets, arrangements for the mums and my dad, and the 10 centerpieces.) Oh, and then another $15 or so for the tartan ribbon - the roll cost $23, but we had ribbon left over that we used for other things.

Here is how they turned out. First image is a close-up of one of them. The guy with the handlebars is my da and the man on the left is my best friend's da (pretty much a surrogate one to me, as far as I'm concerned)...

Second image shows how they looked set out on the tables before the food was served. Here, the arrangements are modeled by my best man and his parents...

There's a picture of the centerpieces we used at this year's Burns Supper in this thread:

The thistle and California Poppy were made of silk and were the most expensive items. Without them you would still have a nice centerpiece.

    Remember to post pictures!

We seemto be missing something here. I quote:

Krewe of Shamrocks and Krewe of Brigadoon

This would seem to lean towards and Irish theme. I like the buckets, but go with Shamrocks and an Irish theme Tartan.
